The Powder River Kid

riday, March
He always believed in being armed for self-
protection and always had a weapon in the room.
“Always keep a gun loaded.” “More people
are killed by loaded guns than unloaded. I keep
mine loaded and when I handle them, I know
them and govern myself accordingly”.
A shot was fired after a fight and a cowboy
lay on the floor dying!
The year was 1892 and the Powder River
Kid, aka, Samuel M Russell, was in the company
of other cowboys in Billings, Montana. They
stopped in at Lottie Miller’s place, a “Billings
Resort” which was in the Redlight district of
town.
One of the ladies of the night screamed
for help after quarreling with Harry Turner, a
cowboy from Miles City that started to beat her!
It is believed that Samuel had taken a liking to
her and came to her rescue, hitting Turner in the
head with his pistol to stop him! Turner grappled
with Samuel for his gun and Samuel shot him,
Turner fell to the floor.
Samuel stated it was self defense, but at first,
it appeared that Turner did not have a weapon on
him, but a knife was discovered on the floor next
to him. Some say the gun discharged accidentally
as Turner grappled for the gun…
The Powder River Kid left the establishment
quickly, leaving Turner and Samuel’s friends
behind.
Turner lived for several hours and gave the
description of Samuel as being a “little fellow
