Introduction

Lesson 4: Music of Lowlands of Luzon

Luzon is the largest and most populous island in the Philippines. It is ranked 15 th

largest in the world by land and see. Considering the geographical location of Luzon

many tribes with different dialects are living in this area.

Music in lowlands of Luzon is undeniably an identity that separates it from other

culture. Thus, music composition of the people of Luzon plays a significant role in

preserving the untold stories of its people in a specific era.

As discussed from the previous module, people of lowlands of Luzon have

different occupations and status. It is in this manner their compositions varies in all

provinces. They express their feelings, history, and religious beliefs through vocal and

instrumental music. Amongst the compositions under lowlands of Luzon are Leron Leron

Sinta, Pamulinawen and Atin Cu Pung Singsing. This is why people of today must give

importance to the composition of our ancestors/katutubo to at least know the history

behind every song composition, how they put meaning to their music and how their life

went under colonization period.

Our ancestors/katutubo are born creative and resourceful. Even before the

colonizers arrived in the Philippines they already have their own instruments to

accompany some of their vocal music. Their instruments are localized which means they

create them from available materials or sources found in their area such as; bamboo

6
pipes, animal skins, brass, woods and etc. When colonizers introduced instruments to

our ancestors/katutubo they find it entertaining but latter a challenge because of lack of

supplies but it was not a problem to them. Improvisations have made them recreate

instruments which has similar sounds to of the original.

So today, let’s explore ways of producing sounds on a variety of sources that is

similar to the instruments being studied and improvised simple rhythmic/melodic

accompaniments to selected music from the lowlands of Luzon to preserve the Philippine

heritage of music.

Let us start now. I hope you will have fun in doing

the different succeeding activities.

EXPLORING WAYS OF PRODUCING SOUND WITH VARIETY OF SOURCES AND

CREATING SIMPLE RHYTHMIC/MELODIC ACCOMPANIMENTS FOR

PAMULINAWEN

10
Exploration in music is considered to be fun and interesting. It can make you be a

musician, a singer and a composer at the same time. Composing can be a troublesome

for other people who cannot appreciate the value of music well. Once a person thinks and

be one in music he can open doors to endless expression of feelings. When a composer

thinks, melodies are rhyming vastly in his/her imagination. But composing music takes a

lot of patience and tenacity to get the job well done.

Composers of lowlands of Luzon created melodic chants and indigenous

instruments based on the materials available where they lived. The folk songs of Luzon

lowlands are performed in his/her native language such as Illocano, Pangasinense,

Kapampangan, Tagalog, Bicolano, and others. Composers do not just create music

without basis. That is why ELEMENTS IN MUSIC is vital to composers. These elements

guide the composers create rhythmic/melodic accompaniments.

In your elementary days you were already taught how these elements work and

how they function in a musical staff. Now let us listen to one of the songs proudly

composed by a lowland composer in Luzon and take a look how the composer utilized

the Elements of Music in his composition called Pamulinawen.

PAMULINAWEN – is a popular old Ilocano folk song possibly pre-Spanish era is

about a girl with a hardened heart who does not need her lover's pleading. It is about

courtship and love. Please listen and read the music sheet carefully.

This time I know you are up for a higher task!

Good luck! And take your activity seriously.

Designing an instrument substitute

Create your improvised musical instruments out of recyclable materials that will

look and sound similar to the musical instruments discussed in this quarter. Take a picture

of your output and send it to your teacher through Gmail/Viber/Messenger. Make sure

Learning is best taught when they are experienced.

Congratulations for doing such a great job in engaging to the

activities.

1. Lowlands of Luzon remind us that Philippines is indeed rich in music and tradition.

It shows how vibrant our culture was because it reflects the tradition of Filipino

people during that era. Our present generation musicians should pay respect and

give credits to our ancestors because they paved the way for us Filipinos to be

recognized and that Philippine has its own music.

2. Accompaniment - is the musical part which provides the rhythmic and/or harmonic

support for the melody or main themes of a song or instrumental piece.

3. Angklung – a rattle like musical instrument made of two to four bamboo tubes

attached to a bamboo frame.

4. PAMULINAWEN – is a popular old Ilocano folk song possibly pre-Spanish era is

about a girl with a hardened heart who does not need her lover's pleading. It is

about courtship and love.

5. Rhythm - a strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or sound.

14
Instructions: In this part of the module, you will be challenged to improvise simple

rhythmic/melodic accompaniment following the rhythm of Leron Leron Sinta. Your

improvised rhythmic/melodic pattern (notes) should be written on the space provided

below the lyrics. The substitute instrument from the previous activity will be used to

accompany the melodic pattern you created. You can use the original music as

background but make sure it does not outdo the sound coming from your improvised

instrument. Record your performance through a video presentation and submit it to your

teacher’s email or have it saved in a flashdrive.

15
You are to apply all musical knowledge and skills that you have learned. You will

be graded according to the rubrics below, read it so you’ll be guided accordingly on what

to consider for you to get highest rating in the performance.
