Flow Calculation Parameters
This section seeks to deal with the set-up parameters necessary to configure the IDEA logger to
calculate flow data.
Separators
The IDEA software package supports three separators in either of the following
configurations:~
Parallel
The parallel configuration is primarily used for high flow rates where the flow from the well
exceeds the capability of a single separator.
Series
The series separator configuration is generally used ina production type scenario where the
first separators in the train have a higher working pressure than the subsequent separators.
This configuration is also used for high GOR wells.
When the separator configuration has been finished either of the two separator schematics are
displayed depending upon the option chosen.

As mentioned previously the configuration schematic icon is specifically dependent upon the
configuration of the Conditional schematic system.
If there is any kind of question about this system then each icon can be utilised 2s the standard
system.

Base Temp
This is the temperature that all the Fpv, Fif, etc calculations are referenced to. If this is
changed it will alter most of the calculated parameters. Thisis included as some systems use
a cifferent Base Temperature for the calculations.
Base Press
This is the pressure thet all the Fav, Y, etc calculations are referenced to. If this is changed it will
alter most of the calculated parameters. This is included as some systems use a different Base
Pressure for the calculations; this is especially pertinent if the site is at elevated heights,
Atmospheric Corrections
Abso from Figure 5.13is a prompt for the atmospheric correction for the location
This is primarily necessary when the logger is used at elevated conditions, such as Colombia,
where the well sites are 2 1000 ft higher than sea level. In this case the atmospheric
pressure is not 14.73 but a lower figure.
Within the ges calculation there is @ section known as the orifice flow constant with the
symbol C’
This is normally expressed as
= J Gas Differential x (Gas Static + 14.73)
c
Although 14.73 is widely accepted as the atmospheric pressure the true equation should
be:
C'= J Gas Differential x (Gas Static + Atmospheric Pressure )

Phase Metering
Phase metering: Two Phase ¥
Figure 5.33
Figure 5.39 shows the options that are available,
Two Phase
Two phase metering is where no free water is produced in the separator.
Water flow rates are produced as a function of the BSW measurements when applied to the oil
flow.
This is the reason the IDEA system uses a split between the percentage water and
percentage solids.
Three Phase
Three-phase metering is when the separator is producing measurable free water.
Water rates are measured using a flow meter on the water line.
The system also adds the trapped water within the oil line to the measured water flow rate to
produce a total water production rate.
There is a great deal of discussion regarding the utilisation of two and three phase separation within
the production / well testing fratemity.
Basically
‘Two Phase- Only used when the well is procucing no water or oll. As the name implies there are
two phases (two components}to the production stream be they gas and oil or gas and water only
‘two phase. In this case all BSW data must be taken upstreamof the senzrator.
Three Phase- Only used when the well is producing water and oil. As the name implies there are
three phases to the production stream, gas, oil and water. In this case all BSW data must be taken
downstream of the separator.
The general rule is that if there is measurable water produced then the flow must be treated as
three phase.

The Macro function complies with the standard mathematical method of solving equations, known
as BODMAS.
Brackets
Division
Multiolication
Subtraction
Thisis the sequence that the Macro Function will attempt to solve the equation.
In the case of more than one, nested brackets, the software will start at the inner bracket pair and
move out.
ad \f you are unsure of a function break it down and put itinindividual brackets.
If the Expression Status declares there is an error then it is more than likely the equation sequence
The next step is to add the remainder of the equation, in our case the dovinstream pressure, shown
in Figure 5.71.
