ARCH595 – Housing
Assignment No. 1 (30 points)

Write your name, subject, and section in your file. Submit your answers in a Word or
PDF format. Answer thoroughly.

1. Why housing is an urban issue rather than architectural? (10 points)

Housing is an urban issue rather than architectural because the term housing itself
cannot be discussed without addressing issues with urban design that have an impact on
the quality of urban living, particularly in high density areas. Housing encompasses more
than only the physical structures or built components that contribute significantly to urban
environment and urban design. It has to do with the spaces that are visible between
buildings, streets, parks, and other public facilities. It is about how these various
dimensions come together to create a space. In addition to being a building, it is viewed
as a means of access to employment, livelihood, community and urban services, and
relative vicinity to ideal residents and neighbors.

2. What does it mean, public realm is not necessarily the green space of formal
parks? (10 points)
Public realm is not necessarily the greens space of formal parks. It is a comfortable
relationship with the space between buildings that makes it a pleasure to walk through.
These are the publicly accessible, owned spaces that are available to everyone. Any
streets, pathways, right of ways, parks, open spaces that are accessible to the public, as
well as any civic and public buildings and facilities, are all considered to be part of the
public realm. If we want to succeed in making places that people want to live and work
in, we must prioritize the quality of our public realm. The quality must give importance to
creating public spaces that are lively and pleasant to use, ease to navigate, legible, and
adaptable.

3. What is the difference between a house and a home? (10 points)

House refers to a building where a person resides. When a place is referred to be
a house, the physical building or structure is meant. A house is a specific type of structure
used for human habitation, one that protects the occupant while also providing space for
the occupant to live in. A home, on the other hand, can be either a structure or any place
that a person considers to be his/her home and place of residence. A home can be a
house or an apartment, but it can also be a tent or an underground cave where a person
desires to reside. When you refer to a location as your home, you are referring to the
place where you and your family reside.
