HR Managers can help raise cultural intelligence in multiple ways.

Below are eleven


recommendations from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
“1. Leverage diverse job boards. Post openings on job boards that specialize in diversity.
2. Highlight diversity on the career page on your website. Be sure your company’s
diversity statement and any current initiatives are obvious on your career page and
reference it in every job description that is being offered.
3. Provide targeted internships and scholarships… to employees from under-represented
groups that will help them advance more quickly in key roles within the organization.
4. Offer diverse mentorships.
5. Conduct diversity training.
6. Create an inclusion council. Recruit a council of eight to 12 top leaders who are
committed to inclusion. They themselves should be as diverse a group as possible. The
council then meets regularly to create strategies that increase diversity.
7. Reward diverse referrals. Ask employees to refer job candidates they know from
under-represented groups in your company and offer rewards or bonuses for
recommending diverse candidates who join the company
8. Celebrate employee differences. Invite employees to share their backgrounds and
traditions in the workplace, including religious and cultural practices.
9. Unconscious bias training for recruiters… Train HR staff to recognize and avoid bias in
the recruitment and hiring process, which may require outside consultants.
10. Incorporate diversity into company policies and practices.
11. Strengthen anti-discriminatory policies.” (Crawford, 2021)

Cultural Diversity not only helps within a company but can also assist in doing external
business. “A company that actively encourages diversity in the workplace will see more
perspectives being discussed and more solutions being thought of than ever before.”
(The importance of cultural diversity in the Workplace, n.d., 2020). The diverse cultures
can assist with knowledge of the different demographics for marketing and sales. For
this reason, along with the HR department, Public Relations & Marketing, Technology,
Graphics, website design, and Sales, all have a responsibility as they will benefit from
being diverse.

While HR can take the lead on the workplace being culturally diverse by having their
recruiting, hiring and onboarding more varied, all departments are impacted by the
benefits and challenges and therefore should also strive to support HR. Policies and
procedures need to be written with input from all departments to engage employees
and have a strong supportive work environment.
I work for a very small charity in a community that while culturally diverse the numbers
are very low. It is very difficult to make certain our organization is diverse as we only
have three staff, so we try to do so with our board of directors. We are in the process of
working with other charities to be more inclusive and representative of our community
cultures.
