ENGINEERING DATA ANALYSIS

1. A mutual fund company offers its customers a variety of funds: a
money-market fund, three different bond funds (short, intermediate,
and long-term), two stock funds (moderate and high-risk), and a
balanced fund. Among customers who own shares in just one fund,
the percentages of customers in the different funds are as follows:

Money-market: 20%
Short bond: 15%
Intermediate bond: 10%
Long bond: 5%
High-risk stock: 18%
Moderate-risk stock: 25%
Balanced: 7%

A customer who owns shares in just one fund is randomly selected.

a. What is the probability that the selected individual owns shares
in the balanced fund?
b. What is the probability that the individual owns shares in a
bond fund?
c. What is the probability that the selected individual does not
own shares in a stock fund?
Ans. a.) 0.7 b.) 0.3 c.) 0.57

2. An insurance company offers four different deductible levels—none,

low, medium, and high—for its homeowner’s policyholders and three
different levels—low, medium, and high—for its automobile
policyholders. The accompanying table gives proportions for the
various categories of policy holders who have both types of
insurance. For example, the proportion of individuals with both
low homeowner’s deductible and low auto deductible is .06 (6% of
all such individuals).
Home Owner’s
Auto N L M H
L 0.04 0.06 0.05 0.03
M 0.07 0.10 0.20 0.10
H 0.02 0.03 0.15 0.15

Suppose an individual having both types of policies is randomly

selected.
a. What is the probability that an individual has a medium auto
deductible and high home owner’s deductible?
b. What is the probability that the individual has a low auto
deductible? A low Home owner’s deductible?

c. What is the probability that the individual is in the same

category for both auto and homeowner’s deductibles?
Ans. a.) 0.10 b.) 0.18; 0.19 c.) 0.41

3. A production facility employs 20 workers on the day shift, 15

workers on the swing shift, and 10 workers on the grave yard shift.
A quality control consultant is to select 6 of these workers for
in-depth interviews. Suppose the selection is made in such a way
that any particular group of 6 workers has the same chance of being
selected as does any other group (drawing 6 slips without
replacement from among 45).
a. How many selections result in all 6 workers coming from the day
shift? What is the probability that all 6 selected workers will
be from the day shift?
b. What is the probability that all 6 selected workers will be from
the same shift?
c. What is the probability that at least two different shifts will
be represented among the selected workers?
Ans. a.) 38,760 b.) 0.054 c.) 0.9946

4. Fifteen telephones have just been received at an authorized service

center. Five of these telephones are cellular, five are cordless,
and the other five are corded phones. Suppose that these components
are randomly allocated the numbers 1, 2,...15 to establish the
order in which they will be serviced.
a. What is the probability that all cordless phones are among the
first ten to be serviced?
b. What is the probability that after servicing ten of those phones,
phones of only two of the three types remain to be serviced?
Ans. a.) 0.0839 b.) 0.24975

5. One box contains six red balls and four green balls, and a second
box contains seven red balls and three green balls. A ball is
randomly chosen from the first box and placed in the second box.
Then a ball is randomly selected from the second box and placed in
the first box.
a. What is the probability that a red ball is selected from the
first box and a red ball is selected from the second box?
b. At the conclusion of the selection process, what is the
probability that the numbers of red and green balls in the first
box are identical to the numbers at the beginning?
Ans. a.) 0.436 b.) 0.581

6. Two pumps connected in parallel fail independently of one another

on any given day. The probability that only the older pump will
fail is .10, and the probability that only the newer pump will fail
is .05. What is the probability that the pumping system will fail
on any given day (which happens if both pumps fail)?
Ans. 0.059

7. A system consists of two components. The probability that the

second component functions in a satisfactory manner during its
design life is .9, the probability that at least one of the two
components does so is .96, and the probability that both components
do so is .75. Given that the first component functions in a
satisfactory manner throughout its design life, what is the
probability that the second one does also?
Ans. 0.926

8. The plate number of vehicles consist of 5-alphanumeric sequence is

arranged such that the first two characters are alphabet and the
remaining 3 are digits. How many arrangements are possible if the
first character is a vowel and repetitions are not allowed?
(REE APRIL 2012/REE FEBRUARY 2014)
Ans. 90,000

9. If a multiple choice test consist of 5 different questions each

with 4 possible answers of which only 1 is correct, in how many
different ways can a student check off one answer to each question?
(REE MAY 2008)
Ans. 1024

10. Four different color flags can be hung in a row to make color coded
signal. How many signals can be made if a signal consist of the
display of one or more flags?
(REE APRIL 1997)
Ans. 64

11. Assume that the helium porosity (in percentage) of coal samples
taken from any particular seam is normally distributed with true
standard deviation of 0.75. Compute a 95% CI for the true average
porosity for 20 specimens from the seam was 4.85.
Ans. (4.52, 5.18)

12. Determine the t critical value(s) that will capture the desired t-
curve area in each of the following cases:

b. Central area=0.95; df=20
c. Central area=0.99; df=20
d. Central area=0.99; df=50
