ACTIVITY Where Is Matter Made

This document describes an activity to investigate the particulate nature of matter. Students will mix sugar and water to observe how sugar dissolves on a particulate level. They will also add food coloring to water and observe how it distributes. This provides evidence that matter is made of tiny particles that are moving and attracting one another. The activity aims to help students infer that matter is made of particles too small to see, and explain how observable situations and events provide evidence of this particulate nature of matter.

Activity title:

WHERE IS MATTER MADE OFF?

 OBJECTIVES:
o infer from given situations or observable events what matter is made of
o explain how these observed situations or events give evidence that matter is made up of tiny particles
 MATERIALS:
½ cup refined sugar
1 cup distilled or clean tap water
1 piece, 100-mL graduated cylinder
1 measuring cup (1 cup capacity)
1 piece transparent bottle (can hold one cup of water) or 250-mL beaker
food coloring (blue, green, or red)
1 dropper
1 stirrer (plastic coffee stirrer or stirring rod)
 CONCEPT CHECK :
o The PARTICULATE NATURE OF MATTER answers and explains the following questions
 Where is matter made off?
 What is between the particles of matter?
 Are the particles of matter moving?
 Are the particles of matter are attracted to one another?

 PROCEDURES
o PART 1: Sugar solution
 Using a clean spoon, transfer 1 teaspoon of sugar to a plastic cup (A).
 Fill another plastic cup (B) half with water and transfer it to cup A and mix it.
 Taste the resulting sugar solution.
Q1. What is the taste of the resulting solution?

Q2. Why do the resulting water solution taste sweet? What happened to the sugar as it was mixed
with water?

o PART 2: Water and food coloring
 Half fill a plastic cup with water
 Add one small drop of food coloring slowly along the side of the plastic cup
 Observe what happened when the food coloring is added to the water right after you drop it
 Let it settle for about 7 minutes
 Observe what happened to the mixture after 7 minutes.
