PROTEIN SYNTHESIS: Transcription and Translation Learning

This document provides a learning activity sheet for grade 12 biology students on protein synthesis through transcription and translation. It outlines the key steps in this two-part process for both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Specifically, it defines transcription as the transfer of genetic information from DNA to mRNA and translation as the process where the information in mRNA is translated into amino acid sequences by rRNA to form polypeptides. The activity aims to have students illustrate these steps by giving the base sequence of the complementary DNA strand, predicting the polypeptide sequence, and completing transcription and translation coding activities.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN GRADE 12 BIOLOGY 2

Activity No.: 7 (Second Semester)
Activity Title: PROTEIN SYNTHESIS: Transcription and Translation
Learning Target: At the end of the lesson, the students CAN:
1. illustrate the steps in protein synthesis: transcription and translation.
1.1 give the base sequence on the complementary strand of the DNA segment; and
1.2 predict the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide synthesized.

I. Essential Ideas

Protein synthesis involves two- step process (transcription and translation) of genetic information flow which
varies between prokaryotes and eukaryotes:
a. In prokaryotes:
transcription translation
DNA mRNa protein

b. In eukaryotes:
transcription translation
DNA mRNa protein
nuclear membrane cytoplasm

Transcription is defined as a process where genetic information transferred to mRNA to a RNA

molecule, that is, mRNA.

Translation is defined as a process where genetic information transferred to mRNA from DNA is
translated by another RNA, that is, rRNA into amino acid sequences in polypeptides.

Genetic Codes and the amino acids coded

II. Learning Experiences

A. Clarifying Understanding

Directions:
1. Use the DNA code to create your mRNA CODE.
2. Use the mRNA code to create your tRNA code.
3. Use the mRNA code and the Genetic Code to determine your amino acids.
