Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions,
directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to
understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each
SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or
if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises

Hi, dear learner! How are you today? Be happy for you will learn
another interesting lesson. In this module, you will learn about the
Elements of a Story.
This learning module will help you identify the story elements. It
provides discussion about the lesson with appropriate examples and
activities for you to study and answer religiously.

Learning Competency:
Analyzing a story in terms of its elements EN4RC-Ib-2.1.1

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the module, you should be able to:
1) identify the story elements such as setting, character, and plot;
2) use graphic organizers in filling-out the elements of the story;
3) show willingness to read and understand a story.

Please take note that all answers shall be written in your activity
notebooks and that you are not allowed to write anything in the module.

around a museum. They wanted to learn how people lived a long time
ago. Karl walked ahead of his troop with the museum guide explaining

two hours, it was time to go back to the camp.
Outside the museum, Karl saw his troop members all perspiring.
Some were already in their T- shirts. Others were fanning themselves.

important elements of a story. Let us move on to the next part for a
comprehensive discussion of the lesson.

WHAT IS IT

The basic elements of the story are setting, character, and plot.
The setting talks about the place and the time that the events in the
story happened, and this answers the questions when and where.

The characters are the people or animals in the story and answer the
question who.

The plot is made up of the events that happened in the story. It consists
of the beginning, the middle, and the ending. This answers the questions
what and why in the story.

A Cat in the Forest Meets a Bear
A wild cat cried, “I’m lost! How will I find my way home?” A bear
came by. “I can help you find your way through the woods,” he said.
The wild cat jumped on the bear’s back. The bear helped the wild
cat get home. The cat invited the bear for dinner to thank him.

The Crow and the Pitcher
(Aesop’s Fable)
One day, a thirsty crow wanted some water to drink. He looked
and looked for a well. He could not find any. Then, he saw a pitcher
on the road. There was some water at the bottom of the pitcher. He
could not reach the water.

He sat down to drink. He thought and thought. He saw some


small stones beside the road. He smiled and said, “I know what to
do.”

He got the stones one by one. He dropped them into the
pitcher. With each stone that he dropped; the water rose a little
higher. Soon, the water reached the brim or top of the pitcher. He
drank all the water he wanted.
