MODULE 1

INTRODUCTION

In this module, the learners will understand the concept of divisibility. This will facilitate

easier comprehension of the divisibility rules as a pre- requisite skill in obtaining the Greatest

Common Factor (GCF) and the Least Common Multiple (LCM).

You will be able to acquire the following learnings: opportunities for using whole numbers,

factors, multiples, and prime factorization numbers occur in real life; and the use of appropriate

mathematical tools, techniques and strategies will help us solve problems involving divisibility

rules.

FOCUS QUESTION

 Why is it important to have knowledge about divisibility rules?

 How do concepts involving number theory allow us to apply in real life problems?

 How can you determine which number concept, property, and strategy to use in solving

problems involving numbers?

HOOK

Good day!
Before we start our lesson let’s pray our
MATH PRAYER.

Lord Jesus,

We pray today that you multiply your grace on us.

Subtract and take away all of our sins by your

mercy you have shed on us.

Add to my awareness a better understanding of your will

for us in our life.

We will divide our blessings and

grace with those that are not as fortunate like us.

In your perfect and most holy name we come to you,

Jesus, and ask these things.

Amen.

DRILL

Find the answer to the following equation by connecting the column A to the
corresponding answer in column B.

ENGAGE

Let's start enriching your knowledge and skills. Let us begin

with problem analysis.

The pupils will solve this equation 122 + 9 x 7 – 100 ÷ 5.

Compare answers with their seatmates and of Jamaica and Narnia’s.

Jamaica’s answer is 187 and Narnia’s is 67.

Do you have a different answer? Or you have the same?
The correct answer is 187!

Now, explain your answer. How did you come up with an answer of 187? What rules do we
follow in answering such equation? Can you recall those steps?

ILLUSTRATIONS
We follow the GEMDAS or PEMDAS rule when we do calculations involving the four
operations.
1. Grouping symbols or Parentheses – If there are expressions in grouping symbols such
as parentheses or brackets, do them first.
2. Exponents – Evaluate the number with exponent
3. Multiplication or Division – Multiply or divide from left to right.
4. Addition or Subtraction – Add or subtract from left to right.

Let’s try apply the steps now.

When the expression involves addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division with grouping symbols and
exponents, we follow the order:
Step 1: Do what is in the grouping symbol(s) first.
Step 2: Evaluate the exponent.
Step 3: Do multiplication and division from left to right.
Step 4: Do addition and subtraction from left to right.

To solve the problem you need to know if 2, 5 and 10 are factors of 100 or if
100 is divisible by 2, 5 and 10.

To be able to know if a number is divisible by 2, 5 and 10, look at the ones

Therefore, by just looking at the ones digit of a given number, we can simply say
that it is divisible by 2, 5 and 10.

Take note that there may be numbers that may be both divisible by 2 and 5, 5 and
10 or 2 and 10 and likewise be divisible by 2, 5 and 10.

Let’s try to practice all the numbers from 1-30.

Encircle all the numbers that end with 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8.
Box all the numbers that end with 0 or 5.
Shade all the numbers that end with 0.

What are the numbers divisible by 2,5 and 10?_____________

Divisibility is a fast means of determining whether a given

number is divisible by another number without doing the division
process. Therefore, we say that a number is divisible by another
number if the quotient is exact or with a zero remainder.
When do we say that a number is divisible by 2, 5 or 10?
A number is divisible by……
2- if the last digit ends in an even number (2, 4, 6, 8, 0)
5- if the last digit ends in either 5 or 0

Let's start enriching your knowledge and skills. Let us begin

with problem analysis.

During the “Keep Calm and Maintain the Cleanliness

Program” 1000 pupils joined the cleanliness campaign. Ms. Cruz
thought of dividing them into 8 members each. Was she able to
divide them with every student as a member of a group?

1. How will you find the answer to the problem?

_______________________________________

2. How many pupils joined the campaign?

_______________________________________

3. What is ask in the problem?

_______________________________________

ILLUSTRATION

To solve the problem, you need to know if 4, 8,12, or 11 are factors of 1,000 or if
1,000 is divisible by 4, 8, 12, or 11.

Page 16 No part of this module may be reproduced and/or used in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical
without written permission of the writer.
Solution 1:
Dividing 1000 by 4 1000 ÷ 4 = 250, each student is a member of the group
Rule 1: Using the divisibility rule for 4
A number ending in two zeroes is divisible by 4 1000 ends in two zeroes, therefore it is
divisible by 4, and each student is a member of the group.
Solution 2:
Dividing 1000 by 8 1000 ÷ 8 = 125, each student is a member of the group.
Rule 2: Using the divisibility rule for 8.
A number ending in three zeroes is divisible by 8 1000 ends in three zeroes, therefore it is
divisible by 8, and each student is a member of the group.
Solution 3:
Dividing 1000 by 12 1000 ÷ 12 = 83.33, not each student is a member of the group
Rule 3:Using the divisibility rule for 12
The sum of the digits of the number is divisible by 2 and 3
1+0+0+0=1, therefore 1000 is not divisible by 12.
Solution 4:
Dividing 1000 by 11 1000 ÷ 11 = 90.90, not each student is a member of the group

Rule 4: Using the divisibility rule for 11

The sum of the digits in the odd places and the sum of the digits in the even places are
equal or their difference is a multiple of 11. 1000→ (1+0)-0=1, therefore 1000 is not
divisible by 11.

What does the Bible says regarding the rules or regulations in our life?

More Perfect Law

Do not think that I have come to remove the Law and the Prophets. I have not come to
remove but to fulfil them. I tell you this: as long as heaven and earth last, not the smaller letter or
stroke of the Law will change until all is fulfilled. So then, whoever breaks the least important of
these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be the least in the kingdom of heaven.
On the other hand, whoever obeys them and teaches others to do the same will be great in the
kingdom of heaven. I tell you then, that if you are righteous in a much broader way than the teachers
of the Law and the Pharisees, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven.
