Assignment 1-Ship Displacement and Form Ratios

This document contains a naval architecture assignment on calculating ship displacements and forms. It provides 6 examples of calculating ship displacement, draft, waterplane area, block coefficient, midship section area coefficient, prismatic coefficient and length based on dimensions like length, breadth, draft and other given parameters. The goal is to help students learn calculation of key ship parameters and ratios through practical examples.

Naval Architecture Ship Displacements and Ship Form

MAR 201 Assignment (1)

Semester :Second 2022-2023 Level : One
Technology of Ship Operation and Maintain Program
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

A. Goals and Aims

1. Calculation of ship displacement.
2. Calculation of ship form ratios.

1. A box-shaped barge 65 m long and 12 m wide floats at a draft of 5.50 m in sea water.
Calculate:
A. The displacement of the barge;
B. The draft of the barge in fresh water.
SOLUTION
A
𝐿 = 65 𝑚
𝐵 = 12 𝑚
𝑇 = 5.5 𝑚
𝐶𝐵 = 1
𝛾𝑠 = 1.025 𝑡𝑜𝑛/𝑚3
∆= 𝐿 × 𝐵 × 𝑇 × 𝐶𝐵 × 𝛾
∆= 65 × 12 × 5.5 × 1 × 1.025 = 4397.25 𝑡𝑜𝑛𝑛𝑒𝑠
B
𝛾𝐹 = 1 𝑡𝑜𝑛/𝑚3
∆= 𝐿 × 𝐵 × 𝑇 × 𝐶𝐵 × 𝛾
4397.25
4397.25 = 65 × 12 × 𝑇 × 1 × 1 ∴𝑇= = 5.6375 𝑚
65 × 12

2. A vessel, 53 m LBP, breadth 11 m, has a draft of 3.2 m and a CB = 0.73. Calculate

displacement in sea water.
SOLUTION
𝐿 = 53 𝑚
𝐵 = 11 𝑚
𝑇 = 3.2 𝑚
𝐶𝐵 = 0.73
𝛾𝑠 = 1.025 𝑡𝑜𝑛/𝑚3
∆= 𝐿 × 𝐵 × 𝑇 × 𝐶𝐵 × 𝛾
∆= 53 × 11 × 3.2 × 0.73 × 1.025 = 1 395.94 tonnes

3. A ship 150 m LBP and 20.5 m breadth floats at a draft of 8 m and displaces 19500
tones. The midship section area coefficient (CM) is 0.94.

Calculate:
A. The block coefficient;
B. The prismatic coefficient;
SOLUTION

𝐿 = 150 𝑚
𝐵 = 20.5 𝑚
𝑇 =8𝑚
𝛾𝑠 = 1.025 𝑡𝑜𝑛/𝑚3

∆= 𝐿 × 𝐵 × 𝑇 × 𝐶𝐵 × 𝛾 ∴ 𝐶𝐵 =
𝐿×𝐵×𝑇×𝛾
19500
𝐶𝐵 = = 0.773
150 × 20.5 × 8 × 1.025
𝐶𝐵 0.773
𝐶𝑃 = = = 0.822
𝐶𝑀 0.94

4. Find the area of the water-plane of a ship 200 meters long, 30 meters beam, which has
a coefficient of fineness of 0.8.
SOLUTION
CWL = AWP / L× B
Area of water-plane = L x B x CWL
Area of water-plane = 200 x 30 x 0.8
Aw = 4800 m2

5. A ship 135 m long, 18m beam and 7.6 m draught has a displacement of 14000T. The
area of the load water plane is 1925 m2 and the area of the immersed amidships section
is 130 m2. Calculate:
a. CWL,
b. CM,
c. CB,
d. CP.
SOLUTION
𝐴𝑊𝑃 1925
𝐶𝑊𝐿 = = = 0.792
𝐿 × 𝐵 135 × 18
𝐴𝑀 130
𝐶𝑀 = = = 0.95
𝐵 × 𝑇 18 × 7.6

2|Page Assignment (1)

∆ 14000
𝛾 1.025
𝐶𝐵 = = = 0.739
𝐿×𝐵×𝑇 135 × 18 × 7.6
𝐶𝐵 0.739
𝐶𝑃 = = = 0.778
𝐶𝑀 0.95

6. A ship displaces 9450 tons and has a block coefficient of 0.7. The area of the immersed
mid-ship section is 106 m2. If the beam is 18 m and the draught is 6.7m, calculate the
length of the ship and the Prismatic coefficient.
SOLUTION
∆ 9450
𝛾 1.025
𝐶𝐵 = = = 0.7 ∴ 𝐿 = 109.2𝑚
𝐿𝐵𝑇 𝐿 × 18 × 6.7

𝐴𝑀 106
𝐶𝑀 = = = 0.87
𝐵 × 𝑇 18 × 6.7

𝐶𝐵 0.7
𝐶𝑃 = = = 0.8
𝐶𝑀 0.87
