GRADE 7 – PHILIPPINE LITERATURE

LITERARY OR LITERATURE COMPETENCIES


First Quarter:

 From early times up to 1521. It happened before the Philippines was conquered by the
Spaniards. So, the different literary genres during the pre-colonial period were riddles,
proverbs, tanaga, folk tales, folk song and epics. A riddle is a question, a puzzle a phrase
or a statement devised to get unexpected or clever answers. Example: heto na si kaka
bubuka-bukaka (frog). Proverbs are short statements that teach good conduct and
lessons. it also also known as salawikain. Example: Hanggat makitid ang kumot,
matutung mamaluktot. Tanaga is a short poem of 4 lines with 7-8 syllables. Folktales are
inspiring stories of human travails and triumphs depicting all kinds of emotions; to
entertain or to teach morals. Example: ang pagong at ang matsing. Folk songs are poetic
in nature that illustrate historical ang cultural background of a certain group. Example:
leron leron sinta. Lastly is epic, a long poetic form that speaks about the valor and
bravery of heroes’ admirable traits embodying their adventures.
 So, the distinguishing features of myths it can be view of people and explain a belief. In
legend it is historical but not verifiable. In proverbs, it is a scripture (established)
doctrine.
 Expressing Appreciation for Sensory Images Used Good narratives make use of image-
and sound-evoking words to transport a reader into the world of the story. Sensory
images is a strategy readers use to think more deeply about a text. It is when a reader
combines their schema and the information in the text to create an image in their mind.
This image can represent all of the five senses (visual, smell, taste, sound, touch or
feeling).
 A literary device is a writing technique that writers use to express ideas, convey
meaning, and highlight important themes in a piece of text. So, what are the literary
devices? Metaphor, personification, alliteration and etc.
 The mood is the atmosphere of the story, and the tone is the author's attitude towards
the topic. We can identify both by looking at the setting, characters, details, and word
choices. By doing so, it will help us find meaning in the story or passage and help us feel
more connected to the writing. An author's purpose is reflected in the way he writes
about a topic. For instance, if his purpose is to amuse, he will use jokes or anecdotes in
his writing.
Second Quarter:
 The features of poem were the Statement (Subject matter and theme), setting, voice
rhythm, rhyme, sound pattern, imagery and other language usage. Then in the short
stories it included the 5 elements such as the setting, conflict, characters and etc.
 Expressing Appreciation for Sensory Images Used Good narratives make use of image-
and sound-evoking words to transport a reader into the world of the story. 
 Literary devices are specific techniques that allow a writer to convey a deeper meaning
that goes beyond what's on the page. Literary devices work alongside plot and
characters to elevate a story and prompt reflection on life, society, and what it means to
be human.
 Tone is expressed through the words and details the author selects. To determine the
author's tone, you must notice how these words and details are used within the writing.
To determine the mood, you need to know the overall emotion and atmosphere of what
the author intends the reader to feel while reading. The mood can be cheerful, sad,
romantic and etc. Both literary elements and literary techniques can rightly be called
literary devices. An author's purpose is reflected in the way he writes about a topic. For
instance, if his purpose is to amuse, he will use jokes or anecdotes in his writing.
Third Quarter and Fourth Quarter:
 Is just the same which is to explain literary devices used, determine tone, mood,
technique, and purpose of the author. Express appreciation for sensory images used.

GRADE 8 – AFRO-ASIAN LITERATURE
LITERARY OR LITERATURE COMPETENCIES
First Quarter and Second Quarter:

 Students need to express appreciation for sensory images used.


 Explain literary devices used if the sentence uses simile, hyperbole, metaphor and etc. A
literary device is a writing technique that writers use to express ideas, convey meaning,
and highlight important themes in a piece of text. A metaphor, for instance, is a famous
example of a literary device. These devices serve a wide range of purposes in literature.
 Students will determine tone, mood, technique, and purpose of the author.
 Selection process is influenced by culture, history and environment because of the
traditional or experience aspect that applies to it. For example, if one has to choose who
to vote for the coming election, he would probably look upon the records (history) of
the person running for government position.
Third Quarter:

 So, the students will identify the features that was contributed by the southeast Asian
writers when it comes to poem, short story, drama and novels.
 Express appreciation for sensory images used. Explain figurative language used.
Determine key ideas, tone, and purposes of the author. Key idea also called main idea.
So, it is a central idea which is a main point that the author is making. Theme is the main
or central idea in a literary work. It is the unifying element of a story. A theme is not a
summary of characters or events. Rather, it is the controlling idea or central insight of
the story.
Fourth Quarter:

 Fourth quarter is the same in the third quarter.


GRADE 9 – ANGLO-AMERICAN LITTERATURE
LITERARY OR LITERATURE COMPETENCIES
First Quarter:

 Reading literature is a way to discover our personal tastes. It helps us define what we
like and what we do not. It also informs our personal values and worldview, which
shapes how we interact with society. Reading literature also acts as a mirror, in which
we can see the qualities of our personal voice. For example: the students can reflect on
the message of the poem and find values one can apply in real life. Also, students can
discover things about oneself with the help of analyzing the poem or literature.

Determine tone, mood, technique, and purpose of the author
Second Quarter:

 So, what do we mean by valuing other people and their various circumstances in life?
Example: the movie five feet apart. The book: Maybe series by Colleen Hoover (cf and
deaf). Both film and book feature characters who suffer with CF or cystic fibrosis. And by
watching or reading different experiences of the characters with CF, we somehow feel
them, we empathize and we somehow carry that feeling of care, love and
understanding within us. That whenever we encounter or meet people who have the
same condition, we already have built the care, understanding, love, sympathy and/or
empathy towards them. We learn how to value them beforehand. Hence, we learn to
value other people and other circumstances in life. Just by reading or watching without
actually meeting or experiencing in person.
 So, the features of Anglo-American sonnets, it has 14 lines, use rhyme schemes, the
main topic could be about love, beauty and mortality. It could also be about political
issues, gender roles and makes fun of love. in the poem, it features many metaphors
including kennings. Which are compound words that have metaphorical meaning. In
poetry, the more prominent characteristics of this poetry include heroic actions and
codes of conduct, Christian ideals and various figures of speech to enhance the diction.
A vignette (pronunciation: vin-YET) is a short scene in literature that is used to describe
a moment in time. It is descriptive and creates an atmosphere around a character, an
incident, an emotion, or a place. Short stories tend to be less complex than novels.
Usually, a short story will focus on only one incident, has a single plot, a single setting, a
limited number of characters, and covers a short period of time.

Third Quarter:

 People around the world are divided by distance, religion, race and culture. Through
literature, you can virtually travel or reach other places and connect to people. Discover
various traits, behaviors and personalities to a certain situation.
Fourth Quarter:

 Literature as a means of understanding unchanging values in the world because It allows


the readers to reflect the lessons learned from literary pieces. Literature reflects and
imitates life. We would be able to fully grasp and appreciate the lives and stories of
every people in the planet through various stories, whether it may be fiction or non-
fiction.
 The mood is the atmosphere of the story, and the tone is the author's attitude towards
the topic. We can identify both by looking at the setting, characters, details, and word

GRADE 10 – WORLD LITERATURE

First Quarter- Fourth Quarter:

 From 1st to 4th quarter the students need to express appreciation for sensory images
used. Determine tone, mood, technique, and purpose of the author.

GRADE 11 – 21ST CENTURY LITERATURE FROM THE PHILIPPINES AND THE WORLD
LITERARY OR LITERATURE COMPETENCIES

First Semester:
 Traditional literature is a genre of literature in which stories have been passed down
within a culture through generations, both through oral tradition and in written form.
Local writers directly influence literary traditions. Basically, a majority of writers will
write on their past history or what happened to them in common a while. Events in a
society are highly associated with the culture of that place. By writing on those
traditions they help grow those literary traditions both locally and regionally. They also
remind people of those cultures that were long forgotten. Local writers will also help to
explain events in details hence people locally or regionally depending on the popularity
of the writers is in a position to understand the literary traditions. Writers are basically
able to spread their literary traditions in a variety of ways. One way is through poems
and songs.
 The contributions of canonical Filipino writers had a significant impact on the
development of Philippine literature. And the impact is because they poured their
hearts and some values into their works, which captivated and thrashed the hearts of
readers for a variety of personal, explicable, and unexplainable reasons. Almost all of
the works of canonical Philippines authors depict the sufferings, discrimination, and
struggle of Filipinos to obtain their long-awaited freedom.
 So, the students will be ask to differentiate/Compare and contrast the 21 st century
literary genres from different periods of the Philippines from pre-colonial period to
Japanese period.
 So, students will analyze what kinds of figure of speech are there in text or what figure
of speech is being used. If it is Simile, metaphor, personification and other literary
techniques and devices.
 To have multimedia skills means that you possess the expertise to use and manage
various media formats to complete projects or work. A diverse range of skills—detailed
knowledge of computers, text, graphic arts, sound, and video. 
 Multimedia is the program that combines text, graphics, animation, video and audio.
Just like Blog or a “weblog”, mind mapping, mobile phone of text tula, slideshow
presentation, tag cloud, and video.
 Information and Computer Technology is already part of our society. In fact, it already
has taken its toll in the context of subject matters in education. As to its benefits to
literary, it gives readers and learners more access to literary works which made it easier
for learners to understand. Giving access to learners of the literary works through
technology makes it more fun while learning the beauty of literary. Also, ICT skills help
the editors to craft a better and nicer literary works through making good conceptual
designs on literary outputs. It also make their workload lighter through the use of some
web applications which can detect plagiarism and other related issues in writing. As
such, ICT skills are always important in promoting, crafting and conveying the message
of literary works.
Second Semester:

 What are representative texts? It is a term used widely to refer to a group of literary
works that are considered the most important of a particular time period or place.
 A literary element refers to components of a literary work (character, setting, plot,
theme, frame, exposition, ending/denouement, motif, titling, narrative point-‐of-‐view).
Genre- a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized
by similarities in form, style, or subject matter. If it is fiction or non fiction. Romance,
action, comedy, fantasy, horror and etc. The particular groupings for literary traditions
can be national (English, German, Chinese), formal (epic, tragic, comic, lyric, narrative,
poetic, dramatic), or periodic (ancient, medieval, modern.)
 Appreciating literary works can be done by performing them in many ways such as
discuss the elements of literary works, write a note on certain aspect, recite poems,
performing drama on stage and so forth. The second way is more to apply the literary
works we have read in a real-life situation.
 So, again the students will identify the figures of speech and other literary techniques
and devices in the text.
 What is critical reading strategies? Critical reading is the application of specific methods,
models, questions, and theories that result in greater clarity and comprehension.
A critical reading of the material requires more effort and comprehension than a simple
"skim" of the text. Critical reading does not include being critical when reading; it simply
entails connecting with what you read by posing questions such as: What is the author
attempting to say? What is the primary argument being made? To read critically is to
evaluate what you are reading with discernment. Example: Annotating, contextualizing,
outlining, summarizing, exploring the figurative language and etc.
 To have multimedia skills means that you possess the expertise to use and manage
various media formats to complete projects or work. Examples of multimedia formats
include television, film, social media, visual art, textiles, graphics, video games and
podcasts.
 So, again, the students will need to apply ICT skills in crafting an adaptation of a literary
text.
