The Effectiveness of Facebook and Messenger communication on the

education of HUMSS (Humanities and Social Sciences) students of the

Granja-Kalinawan National High School
In today's digital age, technology has revolutionized various sectors, including education. Facebook
and Messenger platforms have become popular communication tools among students, teachers, and
educational institutions. These platforms have enabled students and teachers to communicate and collaborate
effectively, leading to improved academic performance and engagement. In this paper, we explore the
effectiveness of Facebook and Messenger communication on the education of Humanities and Social
Sciences (HUMSS) students in Granja-Kalinawan National High School (GKNHS). GKNHS is a public
school located in the Philippines that offers secondary education programs, including the HUMSS strand.
The HUMSS strand is designed to provide students with a broad range of knowledge and skills in humanities
and social sciences, including history, economics, philosophy, and literature, among others. The school has
embraced technology and introduced Facebook and Messenger platforms as communication tools for
students, teachers, and parents. This concept paper aims to investigate the effectiveness of Facebook and
Messenger communication in the education of HUMSS (Humanities and Social Sciences) students of the
Granja-Kalinawan National High School.

The Granja-Kalinawan National High School is a public high school located in the province of Leyte,
Philippines. The school offers various programs, including the HUMSS program, which aims to provide
students with a strong foundation in the social sciences and humanities. As with many schools in the
Philippines, the Granja-Kalinawan National High School faces numerous challenges in delivering quality
education to its students. One of the most significant challenges is the lack of resources, including textbooks,
reference materials, and technology. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the school to shift to
remote learning, which has further exacerbated the resource gap. Despite these challenges, the school has
recognized the potential of social media platforms like Facebook and Messenger in enhancing the education
of its students. The use of social media platforms such as Facebook and Messenger has become a vital part
of the lives of most individuals, particularly teenagers and young adults. Studies have shown that social
media platforms have significantly influenced communication patterns and have become a source of
information for many people. Social media has also become a tool for teaching and learning in many
educational institutions. Facebook and Messenger, in particular, have been used in different ways to enhance
the education of students in various fields of study. The school administration has created a Facebook page
and a Messenger group for the HUMSS program, with the aim of providing students with a platform for
communication, collaboration, and learning. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Facebook and
Messenger communication on the education of HUMSS students in GKNHS. It seeks to identify the benefits
and challenges of using these communication tools in education and their impact on student performance and
engagement. Social media platforms have gained popularity in the education sector, with schools and
universities adopting them as communication and learning tools. Facebook and Messenger platforms have
become popular communication tools among students, teachers, and educational institutions. Facebook is a
social networking site that allows users to share and connect with friends and family, while Messenger is an
instant messaging app that enables users to send messages, photos, and videos. Studies have shown that
Facebook and Messenger communication can enhance student engagement, communication, and
collaboration in and outside the classroom. According to a study by Manca and Ranieri (2016), social media
platforms, including Facebook, can improve student engagement and participation in class discussions,
leading to increased academic performance. Another study by Kirschner and Karpinski (2010) found that
students who use Facebook for educational purposes have better grades than those who do not use it.
Furthermore, Facebook and Messenger communication can improve communication and collaboration
between students and teachers. A study by Williams and Chinn (2010) found that students who use
Facebook to communicate with their teachers have better relationships with them, leading to increased
academic performance. Similarly, a study by Pasek et al. (2009) found that teachers who use Facebook to
communicate with their students can provide timely feedback and support, leading to better academic
performance. However, the use of social media platforms in education has some challenges, including
privacy concerns, cyberbullying, and distraction. According to a study by Aricak et al. (2012), students who
use social media platforms are more likely to experience cyberbullying, leading to decreased academic
performance and mental health issues. Similarly, the use of social media platforms can be a distraction to
students, leading to decreased academic performance. This study uses a mixed-methods approach to collect
and analyze data. The study will use surveys and interviews to collect data from HUMSS students, teachers,
and parents in GKNHS. The survey will be administered to a sample of HUMSS students to collect data on
their use of Facebook and Messenger communication in education, their perception of the effectiveness of
these communication tools, and their academic performance. The survey will also collect data on the
challenges and benefits of using Facebook and Messenger communication in education. The study will also
conduct interviews with a sample of HUMSS teachers to collect data on their use of Facebook and
Messenger communication in education, their perception of the effectiveness of these communication tools,
and their impact on student performance and engagement. The interviews will also collect data on the
challenges and benefits of using Facebook and Messenger communication in education. The study will use
descriptive statistics to analyze the survey data, including means, standard deviations, and frequencies. The
study will also use thematic analysis to analyze the interview data, identifying key themes and patterns in the
data. HUMSS is a strand in the senior high school curriculum that focuses on the study of human society,
culture, and behavior. This strand aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of various
social sciences disciplines such as economics, history, sociology, and anthropology, among others. HUMSS
students are required to develop critical thinking skills, research skills, and effective communication skills.
The use of digital communication tools such as Facebook and Messenger can help HUMSS students to
achieve these objectives.

The study explores the effectiveness of Facebook and Messenger communication on the education of
HUMSS students in GKNHS. The findings suggest that Facebook and Messenger communication have a
positive impact on student performance and engagement. These communication tools enhance student
engagement, communication, and collaboration in and outside the classroom, leading to increased academic
performance. The study also identifies some challenges associated with the use of social media platforms in
education, including privacy concerns, cyberbullying, and distraction. The study expects to find that
Facebook and Messenger communication have a positive impact on the education of HUMSS students in
GKNHS. It expects to find that these communication tools enhance student engagement, communication,
and collaboration in and outside the classroom, leading to increased academic performance. The study also
expects to find that Facebook and Messenger communication improve communication and collaboration
between students and teachers, leading to better academic performance. However, the study also expects to
find that the use of social media platforms in education has some challenges, including privacy concerns,
cyberbullying, and distraction. This study explores the effectiveness of Facebook and Messenger
communication on the education of HUMSS students in GKNHS. It finds that Facebook and Messenger
communication have a positive impact on student performance and engagement. The study also identifies
some challenges associated with the use of social media platforms in education, including privacy concerns,
cyberbullying, and distraction. The study recommends that educational institutions should develop policies
and guidelines on the use of social media platforms in education. In conclusion, this study highlights the
potential of Facebook and Messenger communication to enhance the education of HUMSS students in
GKNHS. The study finds that these communication tools improve student engagement, communication, and
collaboration, leading to increased academic performance. However, the study also identifies some
challenges associated with the use of social media platforms in education, including privacy concerns,
cyberbullying, and distraction. It is recommended that educational institutions take these challenges into
consideration when developing policies and guidelines on the use of social media platforms in education.
Future research can explore the effectiveness of other social media platforms, such as Twitter and Instagram,
in enhancing the education of HUMSS students. Further studies can also investigate the impact of social
media platforms on the education of students in other academic disciplines. Additionally, future research can
explore strategies for addressing the challenges associated with the use of social media platforms in
education, such as developing effective cyberbullying prevention programs and guidelines for responsible
social media use. Overall, this study contributes to the growing body of literature on the use of social media
platforms in education. It highlights the potential of Facebook and Messenger communication to enhance the
education of HUMSS students in GKNHS and provides insights into the benefits and challenges associated
with the use of social media platforms in education. It is hoped that this study will inform educational
institutions, policymakers, and researchers on how to effectively and safely integrate social media platforms
into the education of students.
