Assignment On Cooling and Lubrication

The document is an assignment on engine cooling and lubrication systems. It contains two questions each with multiple parts. Question 1 asks about the purposes of a lubricating system, characteristics of engine oil, diagrams of internal lubrication systems, and whether to remove a thermostat. Question 2 asks about the purpose of the cooling system, possible causes of overheating, jobs of engine oil, and characteristics of satisfactory engine oil.

ASSIGNMENT ON COOLING AND LUBRICATION

NAME:
ID:
PLANT 2

QUESTION 1
a) i. List the purposes of a lubricating system? [7 MARKS]
ii. What are the characteristics of a satisfactory engine lubricating oil?
[5 MARKS]
b) With the aid of a neat diagram explain the internal forced feed and splash
lubricating system. [6
MARKS]
c) When Kofi received his new car from Europe, he was advised by a friend to
remove the thermostat in the engine because in Africa it’s of no use. As an
engineer do you agree with Kofi’s friend? Explain.
[4 MARKS]
d) Should you remove the radiator cap to check the coolant level of a system
having an expansion tank? Explain. [3 MARKS]

QUESTION 2

a. What is the purpose of the engine cooling system?

b. The red light stays on or the temperature gauge registers in the heating zone of a
generator. What will be the possible causes you will list in relationship to the
cooling system?
c. Name any six jobs that engine oil must do.
d. What are the characteristics of a satisfactory engine lubricating oil?
[20 MARKS]
QUESTION 1
a)
I. To lubricate each part of the bearing and reduce friction and wear. To carry away heat
generated inside bearing due to friction and other causes. To cover the rolling contact
surface with the proper oil film in order to prolong bearing fatigue life.
II.
 high viscosity index
 thermal stability
 oxidation stability

b)
 In splash lubrication systems, oil is applied to the cylinders and pistons by rotating
dippers on the connecting-rod bearing caps. Each time they rotate, the dippers pass
through an oil-filled trough. After running through the oil trough, the dippers splash oil
onto the cylinders and pistons to lubricate them.

 In a forced-feed lubrication system, a pump circulates lubricating oil through a

cooler and filter to a distribution system that directs the oil to all the bearings and
crosshead shoes.
c) The thermostat is like a valve that opens and closes as a function of its temperature. The
thermostat isolates the engine from the radiator until it has reached a certain minimum
temperature. Without a thermostat, the engine would always lose heat to the radiator
and take longer to warm up. Without a thermostat, the engine can overheat since the
coolant passes through the engine too quickly and won't absorb the heat. In the case of
clogged cores on the radiator, the engine will be able to cool enough and overheat.

d) A pressurized radiator cap raises the boiling point of the coolant, which is why you
should never remove the radiator cap on a hot engine. The overflow bottle lets the
coolant expand when it's hot. If you open the radiator cap too quickly, the sudden loss of
pressure can cause the coolant to boil instantly and cause serious injury.

QUESTION 2
a) The cooling system serves three important functions. First, it removes excess heat from
the engine; second, it maintains the engine operating temperature where it works most
efficiently; and finally, it brings the engine up to the right operating temperature as
quickly as possible

b) A red (occasionally yellow on some vehicles) engine temperature warning light that stays
on or comes on while driving means there's a coolant fault or your engine is overheating
and requires immediate attention. If the temperature gauge on your dashboard has
moved into red let your engine cool down for at least 30 minutes before continuing. If the
light comes on again, this could be symptomatic of an issue with your cooling system, so
check your car into a garage and get it seen to as soon as possible.

c) Engine Oil. Its basic functions within an engine include

 reducing friction
 cooling
 sealing
 cleaning
 serving
 protection for moving parts.
d)
 high viscosity index
 thermal stability
 oxidation stability
