What is Poetry?
~ literary work in which special intensity is given to the
expression of feelings and ideas by the use of
distinctive style and rhythm.

~ writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative


awareness of experience in language chosen and
arranged to create a specific emotional response
through meaning, sound and rhythm.

Elements of Poetry
Lines
~ counterpart of sentences in prose
~ may or may not have fixed number of syllables based on
the type of poem
Stanza
~ A unit of lines grouped together
Some of different types of stanzas are as follows:
Couplet Quintet
Tercets (ABA or AAA) Sextet Octave
Quatrain (AAAA, AABB, ABBA, ABAB) Septet

Meter
~ measurement of the poem
Two ways:
1. Syllables Count
2. Stressed and Unstressed Syllables Count

Example:
Si/lent/ tears/ of/ pain/
The/ Lord/ en/ters/ my/ dim/ heart/
Re/newed/ strength/ and/ faith/

Elements of Poetry
Rhyme
~ the repetition of the same or similar sounds, usually in
stressed syllables at the end of the lines, but sometimes within
a line.

Rhythm
~ the pattern of beats or stresses in a poem.
~ poets use patterns of stressed and unstressed syllables to
create a regular rhythm.

Rhyme Scheme
~ The pattern in which end rhyme occurs.
~ This technique makes the poem easy to remember.

Example:
Not from the stars do I my judgment pluck; - A
And yet me thinks I have astronomy, - B
But not to tell of good or evil luck, - A
Of plagues, of dearth's, or seasons’ quality;- B

Repetition
~ a word or phrase repeated within a line or stanza.
Sometimes, it reinforces or even substitutes for meter (beat),
the other chief controlling factor of poetry.
Anaphora
~ a technique where several phrases or phrases begin with
the same words.
Example:
I came, I saw, I conquered
Mad world! Mad kings! Mad composition
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the
age of foolishness

Epistrophe
~ a technique where several phrases or phrases end with the
same words.
Example:
“We are born alone, we live alone and we die alone”

Alliteration
~ The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of the
words.
Examples:
She sells seashells
Walter wondered where Winnie was
Nick needed new notebooks

Assonance
~ the repetition of vowel sounds which creates rhyme.
Example:
The black cat had the rat’s bag
How now brown cow?
Do you do voodoo?

Consonance
~ the repetition of a consonant sound at the beginning,
middle or end of the word.
Example:
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for
thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.

Onomatopoeia
~ words that are used to represent particular sounds.
Example:
Machine noises – honk, beep, broom, clang
Animal noise – cuckoo, whooping crane, chickadee
Impact sounds - boom, crash, whack, thump, bang
Sounds of the voice - shush, giggle, growl, whine, murmur, blurt, whisper, hiss
Nature sounds - splash, drip, spray, whoosh, buzz, rustle

I was just beginning to yawn with nerves thinking he was


trying to make a fool of me when I knew his tattarrattat at the
door.

Two Essential Elements of Poetry
Theme
~ talks about the central idea or in short, a theme stands for
whatever the poem is about.

Tone
~ refers to the attitude and mood of the poem. It is the
overall atmosphere of the poem which influences the
emotional response of the reader.

Types of Poetry
Lyric Poetry
~ a poem that is very personal in nature. It expresses the
author’s own thoughts, feelings, moods and reflections in
musical language.
~ it derived it’s name from the musical instrument, the lyre.
Ode ~ poem of nobelling feeling, expressed with dignity and praises for
some persons, objects, events or ideas.
Elegy ~ lyric poem which expresses lament and mourning of the dead,
feeling of grief and melancholy.
Song ~ lyric poem in a regular metrical pattern set to music.
Sonnet ~ little song, consisting of merely fourteen lines, follow a strict
pattern of rhyme (Shakespearen)

Types of Poetry
Narrative Poetry
~ it narrates a story through the use of poetic diction either
real or imaginary.
~ this form of poetry describe events in a vivid way, using
some of the elements as short stories, plot characters and
dialogue
Epic ~ long and narrative poem that normally tells a story about a hero
or an adventure, can be oral stories or poems in written form.
Metrical ~ narrative poem consisting usually a single series of
connective events that are simple.
Ballad ~ is often based on a legend or a folk tale, written in four-six
stanzas and has a regular rhythms and rhyme schemes, simplest type of
narrative poetry.

Dramatic Poetry
~ the word “drama” implies one or more characters and
actions.
~ dramatic poetry aims at involving the readers in an
experience or situation, and creates tension, immediacy,
expectation and conflict
~ more emphasis on character rather than on narrative.

Dramatic Poetry

Dramatic Monologue ~ combination of drama and poetry, presents


some line or speech of single character in a particular but complicated
situation and sometimes in a dilemma.

Oration ~ a formal address elevated in tone and usually delivered on


some notable occasion

Character Sketch ~ poem which the writers concerned less with the
elements of story, presents his observations and comments to a
particular individual
