Stop - The Passage

Immigrants arriving at Ellis Island from Eastern and Southern Europe would travel in the cramped lower decks of ships called "steerage". Upon arrival in New York Harbor, one of the first sights would be the Statue of Liberty. Officials inspected immigrants' belongings looking for contraband and would check for diseases like trachoma by examining their eyes with a buttonhook. Those found with diseases were separated for further examination. If answers given during legal inspection did not match ship records, immigrants could be detained. After passing medical and legal inspections, immigrants could proceed to New York, West, or South. Friends and family waiting at the "Kissing Post" would be reunited with arriving immigrants.
