What Is IMs

Instructional materials (IMs) are any resources a teacher uses to help teach students and enhance lessons. IMs are important because they can significantly increase student achievement by supporting learning in multiple ways. Effective IMs improve students' knowledge and skills while engaging them in the learning process. When selecting IMs, teachers should consider elements like content alignment with standards, design for varying skill levels, conceptual understanding, and lack of bias. IMs should also be durable, accessible, updatable, and appropriate for the learning areas and students' capacity. While the teacher is the most important instructional material, quality IMs can aid teaching when used properly.

What is IMs?

Instructional Materials are the tools used in educational lessons which includes
active learning and assessment. Basically, any resources a teacher uses to help him teach
his students is in instructional material.
One important dimension in teacher education that is getting a lot of attention is
related to the use of instructional materials. Instructional materials are those materials
used by a teacher to simplify their teaching. They include both visual and audio-visual
aids and could either be concrete or non-concrete.
These instructional materials bring life to learning by stimulating students to
learn. The use of instructional materials in the classroom has the potential to help the
teacher explain new concepts clearly, resulting in better student understanding of the
concepts being taught. However, they are not ends in themselves but they are means to
an end (Kadzera, 2006).
It is held that good teaching resources can never replace the teacher but the
teacher uses them to achieve their teaching and learning objectives. Some of the
instructional materials necessary for effective teaching and learning of Social Studies
include the chalkboard, models, graphs, charts, maps, pictures, diagrams, cartoons,
slides, filmstrips, radio, and television (Kochhar, 1991). The importance of the use of
these materials cannot be underscored.
This has been emphasized by a number of scholars. Lockheed (1991) says that
instructional materials are critical ingredients in learning and that the curriculum could
not be easily implemented without them.
Kochhar (1991) adds that a teacher who has adequate and relevant teaching
facilities is more confident, effective and productive. Similar sentiments are shared by
Steel (1983) who asserts that relevant instructional materials enable the learners to have
a clear understanding of Conflict and Conflict Resolution.
Instructional materials are essential since they help the teacher and learners
avoid overemphasis on recitation and rote learning that can easily dominate a lesson.
Resource materials allow learners to have practical experiences which help them to
develop skills and concepts and to work in a variety of ways. The work of Sampath
(1990) graphically explain that people learn more through the senses of sight and
hearing compared to other senses.

 Learning would be interesting and meaningful.

 Knowledge acquired would be retained for a longer time.
 Different skills would be acquired by learners.
 Students would be actively involved during lessons
The implication here is that for more knowledge to be internalized, more of the
learner’s senses have to be stimulated other than hearing alone. In learning and
teaching, the various senses can be stimulated through the use of audiovisual materials.
Reasons why we need/use Ims?

 Learning would be interesting and meaningful.

 Students would be actively involved during lessons
 Knowledge acquired would be retained for a longer time.
 Different skills would be acquired by learners.

Why is it important?
Instructional materials provide the core information that students will experience, learn,
and apply during a course. They hold the power to either engage or demotivate
students. This is especially true for online courses, which rely on a thoughtful and
complete collection of instructional materials that students will access, explore, absorb,
and reference as they proceed in a course.
Therefore, such materials must be carefully planned, selected, organized, refined, and
used in a course for maximum effect. The planning and selection of instructional
materials should take into consideration both the breadth and depth of content so that
student learning is optimized.
These instructional materials bring life to learning by stimulating students to
learn.
The use of instructional materials in the classroom has the potential to help the
teacher explain new concepts clearly, resulting in better student understanding
of the concepts being taught.

Guidelines in the selection of instructional materials

The following are guidelines in the selection of instructional materials or educational
media:
Size
Is the material (text or picture) big enough to be seen by the farthest pupil? is relativity
of size of pictures observed when it is viewed with other materials or pictures?
Example, the size of the cat compared with the size of the carabao
Color
Is the material colorful? Pupils are attracted by bright and dark colors. And if so, is the
choice of colors life-like and harmonious. Does the color facilitate understanding?
Durability
Can the material stand several uses? Can it be used over and over again.
Economy
Is the material worth its costs? Or can a cheaper material in terms of time spent in
preparing it and in terms of the cash value be used?
Easy to Handle
Is the material light and easy to manipulate. Is it easy to put up and then and store for
future use.
Relevance
Is the material up to date? Is it related to the lesson in particular and to the specific
needs, problems, and experiences of the target clientele?
Novelty
Does the material possess an element of newness? Can it arouse the curiosity and a
sense of discovery in the learners?

To be an effective Teacher, must know how to utilize a variety of instructional material at all
levels such as presentation and handouts to enhance the quality of their lesson. The quality of
those materials directly impacts the quality of teaching. Knowing how to find the instructional
materials is a valuable for a teacher to have.

Instructional Materials are the tools used in educational lessons which includes active learning
and assessment. Basically, any resources a teacher uses to help him teach his students is in
instructional material. It is important because they can significantly increase student achievement
by supporting student learning. This process aids in the learning process by allowing the students
to explore the knowledge independently as well as providing repetition.

The importance of IMs is to improve students’ knowledge, abilities and skills to monitor their
assimilation of information, and to contribute to their overall development and upbringing. It
also clarifies important concept to arouse and sustain student’s interest, give all students in a
class the opportunity to share experiences necessary for new learning. And help learning more
permanent.
There are some elements of IMs to know in preparation to make it, The content must aligned in
the curriculum and standards, current, valid and reliable with real-world of examples. Design to
meet the interest of individual learners from various skill levels. Enhance conceptual
understanding and engages higher order thinking skills. Free from bias.

It is equity and accessibility, IMs are durable, easily stored, transported and universally
accessible. IMs are easily updated and are adaptable and customizable to match the resources of
the school.
It is appropriate for the learning areas and appropriate for learner’s capacity or levels of
learnings.
Teaching is a total package; it is true that a teacher is the best instructional material because the
is the one who manage the classroom. As the saying goes “you are the captain of your mind and
the master of your soul”.
