PROBLEM:
1. A 1.5𝑚 diameter circular footing has its bottom 1.5𝑚 below the ground surface. 𝜙 ′ = 20°, 𝑐 ′ = 15 kN/m2 , 𝛾 =
18.15 kN/m3 and 𝛾𝑠𝑎𝑡 = 19.51 kN/m3
a. If the ground water table is located at a depth of 1.2m below the ground surface, compute the allowable load
that the footing could carry if it has a factor of safety of 3.
b. Find the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil if the ground water table is 0.5m above the bottom of the
footing.
c. Find the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil if the ground water table is 3m below the ground surface.
d. Find the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil if the ground water table is at the bottom of the footing.
2. A square foundation (𝐵𝑥𝐵) has to be constructed. Assume that 𝛾 = 17.4 𝑘𝑁/𝑚3 , 𝛾𝑠𝑎𝑡 = 18.55 𝑘𝑁/𝑚3 , 𝜙 ′ =
36°, 𝑐 ′ = 5.0 𝑘𝑁/𝑚2 and 𝐷𝑓 = 1.0𝑚. The gross allowable load with 𝐹𝑆 = 3 is 700 𝑘𝑁. Determine the size of
the foundation if:
a. the ground water table is located at a depth of 1.2m below the ground surface
b. the ground water table is 0.5m above the bottom of the footing.
c. the ground water table is 3m below the ground surface.
d. the ground water table is at the bottom of the footing.
3. A 2.0𝑚 wide continuous foundation carries a wall load of 350 𝑘𝑁/𝑚 in a clayey soil where 𝛾𝑠 = 19.0 𝑘𝑁/𝑚3 ,
𝑐 ′ = 5.0 𝑘𝑁/𝑚2 , and 𝜙 ′ = 23°. The foundation depth is 1.5𝑚. Determine the factor of safety of this foundation.
4. A rectangular foundation is 2m x 4m in plan. The soil supporting the foundation has a friction angle of 𝜙 ′ = 25°,
𝑐 ′ = 20 kN/m2 , 𝛾 = 18.11 kN/m3 and 𝛾𝑠𝑎𝑡 = 19.28 kN/m3 . Assume that the depth of the foundation 𝐷𝑓 =
1.5m and that general shear failure occurs in the soil. Determine the allowable gross load on the foundation if the
ground water table is located 1.2m below the bottom of the footing. Use a factor of safety (FS) of 3 and Meyerfof
formula.
