About installing or upgrading SolarWinds

Platform products and scalability engines


When you download a SolarWinds Platform product from the Customer Portal or from
www.solarwinds.com, the download includes the “SolarWinds Installer” and” upgrade
advisor”.

The installer is an all-in-one application for installations and upgrades.

Use the SolarWinds Orion Installer to install or upgrade one or more Orion Platform products

simultaneously. When installing new products into an existing Orion environment, the Orion

Installer verifies compatibility between the product versions, providing notifications if

additional steps are needed. The Orion Installer also supports upgrades from older software

versions with a generated upgrade path, merging the capabilities of the Product Upgrade
Advisor into the installer.

Note: When you download an Orion Platform product from the Customer Portal or
from www.solarwinds.com, the Orion Installer is included in the download.

Pre-stage files: Save time during an installation or upgrade by downloading the files in advance.
Pre-staging files does not affect any existing SolarWinds Platform services.
Pre-requisites:
To deploy SolarWinds Platform product locally, on a server (VM), review the following
recommendations, considering large size.

(Note: there are some modules with small-size license however the presence of HA and polling
engines make the deployment belong to SolarWinds large size):

1. For SolarWinds DB pre-requisites

 If you have your SQL Server deployed on a virtual machine, you must maintain SolarWinds
Platform database on a separate physical drive.
 SQL Server enterprise 2016 SP1 and later
 Quad core processor or better
 8 GB/16 GB RAM
 20 GB/40 GB HD
 Ports to open:
Outbound: 22, 25, 465, 587, 1433, 1434,

Inbound: 80, 162, 443, 514, and 17778

Bi-directional: 53, 135, 161, 5671, 1777

 Account privileges
SolarWinds recommends that SolarWinds Platform administrators have local administrator privileges on
the SolarWinds Platform server to ensure full functionality of local SolarWinds tools.
User accounts limited to the SolarWinds Platform Web Console do not require local administrator
privileges.

Users running the Configuration wizard must have DBO specified as the default database schema.

2. Single SolarWinds Platform product pre-requisites

 Windows 2016 or later


 A single quad-core processor and 8 GB of RAM are required for the first Software module.
 For each additional module on the same system, add one CPU core and 2 GB of RAM
 Processor speed: Use processors that work at 2.4 GHz or faster.
 CPU: Do not enable Physical Address Extension (PAE).
3. To deploy SolarWinds Platform product locally, on a server (VM), review the
following recommendations, considering large size.

Requirements Large deployment

SolarWinds Platform server Physical server or virtual machine (VM)


CPU: 4 cores + 1 core for each additional module
RAM: 8 GB + 2 GB for each additional module

Storage: 150 GB, 15,000 RPM
1 x 1 Gb dedicated NIC
Windows Server 2022, 2019, or 2016, Standard or
Datacenter Edition

The Configuration Wizard activates IIS and .NET 4.8 or later


if they are not already on your server.

Standard or Enterprise Edition of the following SQL


Primary database server
versions:
SQL Server 2019, including Linux installs
SQL Server 2017, including Linux installs

SQL Server 2016: SolarWinds recommends SQL Server


2016 SP1 or later. Support for Microsoft SQL Server Service
Packs and Cumulative Updates is assumed unless
otherwise noted.

NTA Flow Storage Database Physical server or virtual machine


Quad core processor or better
16 GB RAM
Note: Increase the NTA Flow Storage database RAM as the
database size increases.
100 GB - 1 TB of storage capacity on local NTFS disk

Note: More or less space may be required, depending on


your data retention policies and the number of stored
flows. You need approximately 8 GB of additional storage
for every 1,000 flows per second retained for 30 days. For
example, if you want 50,000 flows per second stored for
30 days, you need a base of 100 GB plus an additional 400
GB of storage.

1 x 1 Gb dedicated NIC
Log Analyzer Database Physical server or virtual machine
Quad core processor or better
16 GB RAM
100 GB - 1 TB of storage capacity on local NTFS disk

Note: More or less space may be required, depending on


the number of stored events. Log Analyzer supports 1,000
Events per Second across all polling engines.

1 x 1 Gb dedicated NIC
MS SQL Server 2016 with SP1 and later, Standard or
Datacenter Edition
Supported collations:
English with collation setting
SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
Additional polling engine server Virtual machine recommended
Quad core processor or better
8 GB + 2 GB for each additional module

The SolarWinds Installer installs .NET 4.8 if it is not already


on your server.

Note: Your first SolarWinds Platform product must meet the minimum system requirements for
that product. Typically, you need a single quad-core processor and 8 GB of RAM. For each
additional module on the same system, add one CPU core and 2 GB of RAM.
