Numerical of Local Solar Time and Day Length Calculation

The document discusses calculating local solar time (LST) and day length from other time and location variables. It provides an example calculation of LST for Ahmedabad at 16:00 IST on June 10th. It also works through an example calculation of day length in Srinagar on July 1st, finding the day length to be 14 hours and 14 minutes.

. Local Solar time or Local Apparent time

So final equation of LST or LAT,

LST or LAT = IST ± [(𝑳𝒔𝒕 - 𝑳𝒍𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒍 ) * 4] + E

Where, E = Equation of time correction in minutes

𝐿𝑠𝑡 = standard meridian for local time zone
𝐿𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑎𝑙 = longitude of the location in degree West or East

Here + sign is for Western Hemisphere

- sign is for Eastern Hemisphere

. Numerical of LST or LAT
Calculate Local Apparent time corresponding to 16:00 hours Indian standard
time on 10th June, a location Ahmedabad (72.5714 E longitude). Also calculate
the hour angle for the same. Take E = 1:15.

Data given:

IST = 16:00 hours

N = 31 + 28 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 10 = 161 days
Llocal = 72.57140 E
Lst = 82.50
E = 1:15 = 1 minute and 15 seconds

www.GTUSTUDIES.com
. Numerical of LST or LAT
Now LST or LAT,

LST or LAT = IST ± [(𝑳𝒔𝒕 - 𝑳𝒍𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒍 ) * 4] + E

= 16 hours – [(82.50 - 72.57140 ) * 4] + 1 minute & 15 s

= 16 hours – [9.9286 * 4] + 1 m & 15 s

= 16 hours – [39.7174 minute] + 1 m & 15 s

= 15 h and 60 m – [39 m & 43 s] + 1 m & 15 s

= 15 h & 20 m & 17 s + 1 m & 15 s

LST or LAT= 15 h & 21 m & 32 s

. Numerical of LST or LAT
Now hour angle,

ω = (12:00 – 15.3588) * 15

= -3.3588 * 15

= -50.382 (minus sign for the afternoon)

ω = −𝟓𝟎. 𝟐𝟑𝟎

. Numerical of Day length
The latitude of Srinagar is 340 . Find day length in hrs. When sunlight is
available on 1st July.

Data given:

Latitude = Ø = 340
N = 31 + 28 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 30 + 1 = 182

For the day length,

Td = 2× ω/15

So ω is needed to be found out for calculation of day length.

. Numerical of Day length
Now,

ω = 𝒄𝒐𝒔−𝟏 (− 𝒕𝒂𝒏 Ø × 𝒕𝒂𝒏 𝜹 )

𝛿 is needed to be found out first.

δ = 23.45 * sin [360 / 365 * (284 + N)]

= 23.45 * sin [360 / 365 * (284 + 182)]
= 23.45 * sin [ 459.6164 ]
= 23.45 * 0.9859

δ = 𝟐𝟑. 𝟏𝟐𝟎

www.GTUSTUDIES.com
.Now,
Numerical of Day length

ω = 𝒄𝒐𝒔−𝟏 (− 𝒕𝒂𝒏 Ø × 𝒕𝒂𝒏 𝜹 )

= 𝑐𝑜𝑠 −1 (− 𝑡𝑎𝑛 34 × 𝑡𝑎𝑛 23.12)

= 𝑐𝑜𝑠 −1 (−0.2879)

ω = 106.73

Now,
Td = 2× ω/15

= 2 × 106.73/15
= 14.23 hrs
Td = 14 hrs and 14 minutes
