Instructions
1. This case study can be attempted by up to six (6) members per group. Minimum members per group are
restricted to four (4). No individual work will be accepted.
2. Complete everything in section A, while for section B, Task 1 is compulsory while the last Task 2 or Task 3
only one should be completed based on student selection.
3. Submit your case study on a DVD(s), external hard drive or memory stick (USB). Make sure you
burn/copy the main hard disk file that is the file with the extension .vhd or .vdi ONLY. You are also required
to submit the hard copy of the documentation in PDF on Moodle (e-learning) Tag your storage
media(externally) with appropriate label for easy retrieval. You should keep a backup copy of your
submissions.
4. You are required to document all the settings done. NB: Where necessary, take snapshots of your work
and include them in your documentation.
5. Plagiarism is a serious academic offence, therefore adhere to the rules. Provide your references in
accordance with APA citing/referencing guide. Refer to General Information and Regulations year book,
under Academic Regulations AC3.2: Academic Honesty and Integrity. Also, refer to Policy on student
plagiarism as per 6.1.4 of the General Information and Regulations year book.
6. Clearly indicate student names and numbers of all the participants on the cover page.
7. No late submissions will be accepted.
8. Be guided by the marks allocated to each question deliverable and the grading rubrics
9. Students will be required to present their work . Presentations date will be announced after submission.
Presentations mode will be communicated.

Section A (37 marks)

Question 1 [8]

Obtain any version of Windows operating system from the VM folder(Isnotes):

any other source . Make sure that the operatingsystem works properly. Take screen shoots clearly stating
the steps. Name your VM as “Surname_Initials” ( of the group leader= the one submitting on e-learning and
indicate all your active group members name on the document).

1.1 Install the operating system into a virtual machine (VMware, virtual box, or VirtualPC).
Remember to document important steps of your installation. [4]

1.2 Partition the disk into at least two logical drives (apart from the default ones). Name them
appropriately. [4]

Question 2 [29]

2.1 Memory management

Using Recourse Monitor, record all memory statistics and explain them in detail. Note that you might
be required to initiate some tasks/processes in order for memory usage to be shown. Take screen
shoots clearly stating the steps. The memory statistics must be from your own VM PC that you have
used in Question 1 and not from other unrelated sources [6]

2.2 Device management

a) Install an HP LaserJet printer. Clearly illustrate how you did this. [3]
b) Explain in detail by listing the system requirements when installing a network printer. [4]
c) Show at least three devices that are managed by the system, give screenshots. [3]
d) Some of the tools that can be used on a hard disk are “check disk/drive” and
“defragmentation”. Execute these two tools and describe what their functions are. Give
screenshots. [3]

2.3 Process management.

a) Schedule at least 3 tasks to be executed by the operating system and describe steps of doing
this, showing screenshot as much as possible. [6]
b) Describe how you can stop processes that are using too much CPU time. Describe steps of
doing this showing screenshot as much as possible. Note that you might be required to initiate

some tasks/processes. [4]

Section B (23 marks)

Ensure you are registered to a specific group and you are regular in attending lessons otherwise your project
will not be graded if you do not belong to any group/lecturer. In addition to the storage media requirements
stipulated in SECTION A TIN link will be created on Moodle E-learning platform for Submission of you final
document.

Task 1 [10]

Fab group of companies is an upcoming business that specialises in Big data and Data mining. They are in a
process of setting up their IT systems, and they have consulted you for advice on the operating system they
should use. They are stuck between Windows, MAC and Linux OS.
As a computer expert:
Write a short assay about these three OS. Your essay must among other things present a critical review of these
three OS including a clear and sound recommendation to Turnish group of companies. Your essay will be
scanned for similarity so ensure it is composed ethically. You are to do your own research how to structure a
scientific essay.

The following Task 2 and 3 choose one


Task 2 [10]

Suppose you are an operating system designer and have been approached by the system administrator to
help solve the recurring deadlock problem in your installation’s spooling system. What features might you
incorporate into the operating system so that deadlocks in the spooling system can be resolved without losing
the work (the system processing) that was underway or already performed by the deadlocked processes?
Discuss using a short essay summary to explain how you go about solving deadlock problems.

Task 3 [10]

Provide your critical review on the benefit of using Solid State Disks over Hard Disks.
NB: Sources properly cited / referenced / no “straight forward” “copy and paste”. [3]
