Grade 11 - BBT Solar System

This document provides information about the Grade 11 Earth and Life Science curriculum, which covers the following topics: 1. The formation of the universe through the Big Bang Theory, including the processes involved and evidence that supports it. 2. The components that make up our solar system. 3. The four subsystems that make up Earth and their definitions. It then goes on to explain the Big Bang Theory in more detail through the singularity, inflation epoch, cooling epoch, and structure epoch. Finally, it provides information about our solar system, identifying the planets and some key facts about each one.

GRADE 11

EARTH & LIFE SCIENCE

Learn about the formation of the universe; identify the processes
and the evidence for the BBT

Identify the components of our solar system;

Identify the subsystems of the Earth and define each system

Explain how the Universe is expanding

Recognize the uniqueness of Earth, being the only

planet in the solar system with properties
necessary to support life.

Explain that the Earth consists of four subsystems,

across whose boundaries matter and energy flow.

THE BIG BANG THEORY
explains the origin of the universe from an expansion that
hurled matter and space approximately 13.8 billion years
ago.

explains the formation of light and the abundant

elements of this universe
13.8 BILLION YEARS AGO

At this time, all matter was compacted into a very small ball
with infinite density and intense heat called a Singularity.
Suddenly, the Singularity began expanding, and the universe
as we know it began.
WHAT ARE THE PROCESSES OF
THE BI G BANG THEORY?

Singularity ("Plank" Epoch)

Inflation Epoch
Cooling Epoch
Structure Epoch
SI NGULARI TY
Also known as the Planck Epoch (or Planck Era), this
was the earliest known period of the Universe.

At this time, all matter was condensed on a single point

of infinite density and extreme heat.

Due to the extreme heat and density of matter, the

state of the universe was highly unstable. It thus began
to expand and cool, leading to the manifestation of the
fundamental forces of physics.
I NFLATI ON EPOCH

The universe was filled with high energy density,

growing rapidly and exponentially larger.

During this time. the current make up of the matter of

our universe was set (normal matter, dark matter and
dark energy).
COOLI NG EPOCH

As the universe expanded, it began to be less dense

and less hot. As a result, it created the condition for
physics which enabled the next step in formation

the period known as Big Bang nucleosynthesis (the

creation of new atomic nuclei) also began.
STRUCTURE EPOCH

Galaxy Formation Era

During this epoch, the modern universe began to take

its shape through gravitational forces, as all the matter
expanding began to form into gas clouds, galaxies, stars
and planets that we know of today.
