Test 2: READING
Competences:

 Cultural awareness and expression

1. Read the text.

LONDON WITH A
DIFFERENCE
Are you planning a trip to London at the moment? Of course, you must see all of the usual places: Big Ben,
The Tower of London, Buckingham Palace … But you can also see some unusual places and things.

Neal’s Yard Water Clock is a good place to start. Neal’s

Yard Water Clock is above a shop in Covent Garden. This
clock runs on water and it’s quite precise. Every hour,
figures on the clock start moving. It’s great to watch, but
be careful! One of the figures likes pouring water on the
heads of the people under him.

Another interesting place is the Thin House in Knightsbridge.

This extraordinary house is thinner than normal houses. On
one side, it’s only about 1.67 metres from the front of the
house to the back! Luckily, the other side of the house is
wider than that.

Do you think it’s hard to live in a house like the Thin

House? Well, it’s easier than living at 23-24 Leinster
Terrace in Bayswater. When you look at the front of the
houses on Leinster Terrace, they all look the same. But
two of them are very different. They’re not real! Behind
the houses, you can see the truth. Numbers 23-24 are just
front walls, like houses in a street scene from a Hollywood
film. Now that’s unusual!

2 Mark: Wow, Amy. I can’t believe we’re at Wembley Stadium!
Amy: I know, Mark. Wembley is probably more famous than any other football stadium in the world.
Mark: It’s not just a football stadium, though. They have rugby matches here, too. And other events.
They even have American football games.
Amy: Really? American football in England?
Mark: Yes. Oh, and don’t forget the pop concerts. There are amazing pop concerts here.
Amy: I know. I really want to come to a pop concert here.
Mark: Oh good, the tour’s starting. Come on!
Tour Guide: … and now we’re walking down the passage to the stadium.
Amy: This place is enormous!
Mark: Wembley is enormous. It’s got 90,000 seats.
Amy: Ninety thousand? That can’t be true.
Mark: It is true. In Europe, only Camp Nou Stadium in Barcelona is bigger than Wembley. It’s got over
99,000 seats.
Amy: Hey, you really know about sports stadiums. Oh, look! We’re moving again.
Tour Guide: … we’re in the players’ tunnel. The players come through here at the beginning of the match.
Come with me.
Amy: Wow, it’s incredible! And it all looks so new.
Mark: Well, it is quite new. It only opened in 2007.
Amy: Oh, right.
Tour Guide: … come and sit down.
Mark: Hey, these are great seats! Imagine watching a match from here.
Amy: I really don’t think you can watch a match from here, Mark.
Mark: Why? I’m sure you can buy tickets for these seats.
Amy: You’re not listening to the tour guide. This is the Royal Box. The Queen and her family sit here.
Mark: Ah, that’s a problem …
