6.2 OPERATION
W A R N I N G!
General principle.
The equipment involved prints and automatically applies labels to pallet by means of a programmable logic controller (PLC).
General operation:
1) Label Printing: System Management
2) While the label is being printed is taken over by the pad, Topjet is ready to apply the label to the pallet.
3) When the pallet arrives at the labelling position: the roller conveyor raises the “pallet presence” signal (I0.0), which triggers
the current cycle (Q0.1).
4) When the label has been printed completely the arm advances to perform the application maneuvre.
5) After applying the label, the pad goes back, and returns to its position to pick up a subsequent label.
6) With the applicator arm out of the way (and correctly applied), Topjet lowers the current cycle.
7) With the cycle in progress low, no alarm from Topjet, arm out of the way ( Si+ Si- ) : the roller conveyor can continue the
pallet.
Operation of Eticode
System prints the label (this can happen before the pallet arrives at the labelling station, or later when Topjet’s Running Cycle =
1).
21
6 - COMMISSIONING ETICODE
When the print starts, the solenoid valve is activated to command the suspension of the label (air cushion) to prevent the label
from falling when it is outlet.
Once the label has been printed, the plc activates the suction solenoid valves (vacuum switch) and plus the solenoid valve that
commands the suspension of the label is disabled (air cushion).
At this stage printed label on the pad.
When the pallet arrives in the labelling zone: the roller conveyor stops the transport and raises the “Pallet Presence” signal for
Topjet.
Topjet raises the “cycle in progress” signal, activates the buffer feed solenoid valve, and the label is applied to the pallet.
The pad is pressed up against the pallet by means of the pneumatic circuit that presses the springs and triggers the inductive
proximity sensor, which points out that the label has been applied.
Once the label has been applied, the suction solenoid valves are disabled (vacuum switch) and also the applicator pad forward/
back solenoid valves.
At this stage Topjet, with the machine in its initial position (out of the way), lowers the cycle in progress signal.
The PLC of the roller conveyor with : Cycle in progress=0, Alarm from Topjet=0, Arm out of the way=1 ( Si+ Si- ), it can restart
the roller conveyor and advance the pallet with the label applied.
At this stage the machine is waiting for a new signal enabling pallet for a new work cycle.
6.3 ADJUSTMENTS
A magnetic sensor is fitted on the pad backward cylinder that detects its stand-by position.
With the pad in stand-by, adjust the position of the sensor until the LED switches on to point out that it has been
triggered.
An inductive sensor is fitted on the pad that detects when it is squashed during the pressing phase against the
pack.
Adjust the position of the sensor so that when the pad is not squashed it doesn’t trigger but does trigger when the
pad is squashed.
If there is a photo-electric sensor that detects the presence of the label on the pad applicator put a label on the pad
and then adjust the sensitivity of the photo-electric sensor by turning the trimmer on it so that the sensor triggers
when there is a label.
22
ETICODE COMMISSIONING - 6
6.3.2 Pneumatic adjustments.
The suspension function is a very important part of the applicator, considering that it must keep the label suspen-
ded on the pad while it is outlet.
The inclination of the holes in the air dispenser can be adjusted to improve the air cushion.
You can also increase or decrease the amount of air by means of the pressure regulator on the solenoid valve in-
volved.
When adjusting the suction function, it is a good rule to check if the suction holes are clean and not clogged. There
is also a regulator on the vacuum switch used to increase or decrease the suction phase along the channels in the
buffer.
There are some pressure regulators on the 2 air delivery lines of the cylinder that enable the operator to adjust the
forward and backward speed of the pad movement.
It is important to set a forward and backward speed suitable for the number of applications per minute involved.
The brake on the forward and backward stroke of the cylinder can also be adjusted.
Adjust the brakes so that the cylinder is not subjected to harsh impact at the end of the forward or backward stroke.
6.3.2.4 – Recommended general pressure of the pneumatic circuit: Min = 4 Bar Max 6 Bar.
N.B. Check that the mains supply pressure at the machine is at least 6 bar
Pneumatic Group
By means of the main pressure regulator you can also release the all the air from the pneumatic circuit.
W A R N I N G!
When you release all the air from the pneumatic circuit, the cylinders are no longer pressurised and the mechanical
components cannot therefore be kept in their original position, causing anomalies and possible breakages.

6.4 HOW TO START
NB: The machine must always be started when it is empty.
Turn the electric control panel on by switching the main door locking 0 - 1 switch 1 (position 1).
Turn on the Zebra printer using the power switch.
Enable the applicator by turning the start selector switch to start = 1 position. (Pos.2)
At this stage the machine is ready for an automatic printing and application cycle.
Disable the applicator by turning the start selector switch to start = 0 position (Pos.2).
Turn off the Zebra printer using the power switch.
To stop the machine completely, turn the main door locking 0 -1 switch 0 (Pos. 1) .
- Press the stop button to turn off the air supply from the circuit to lock
the machine.
To reset the alarm, the button must be reset by rotating it, and perform
a reset on the march selector (0-1).
Now the air supply is again present in the circuit, and the label machi-
ne is ready for a new application cycle.

and therefore there are very few routine maintenance jobs involved.
All the operator has to do is replace the thermal roll of tape and the roll of labels in terms of routine maintenance.
26
ETICODE MAINTENANCE - 7
With regard to electrical parts, it is important to keep the photocells that detect the presence of the pack to be label-
led and the photocell that detects the presence of the label on the pad if installed clean at all times.
1 - Ensure the holes in the label suspension air dispenser (air cushion) are clean and not clogged up with bits of
label.
2 - Ensure the suction holes in the pad applicator rubber are free and not clogged with objects, which could com-
promise the perfect operational efficiency of the vacuum switch.
3 - Ensure the rubber (if present) on the pad applicator is not worn and can stop the label when it is outlet from the
printer.
