A. Title of Poem: There Is Another Sky

B. Author of Poem: Emily Dickinson
C. Summary of plot: “There is Another Sky” is a sonnet that depicts the beauty of nature
itself in her described “Garden of Eden” as many call it. However, the poem was written
in conjunction with a letter the writer sent to her brother pleading him to come
back home. She would give anything for him to come back.
D. Statement: In the poem, “There is Another Sky”, Emily Dickinson tries to convince
Austin, who is her brother, to come back from Boston to Amherst. Contextually progressing,
she tells her brother stories of “home”. The first line of the poem itself “There is another sky”
is a metaphor towards expressing “There is another place for you”.

E. Context: Emily Dickinson wrote "There is another sky" in conjunction with a letter she sent to
her brother, Austin. In the poem, she tries to convince Austin to return from Boston to
Amherst. In this context, the poem is about place.
F. Setting : The poem is inside a letter sent to her beloved brother Austin. Hence the setting is
just that; a letter. But contained within are fair skies, light and darkness, forests and fields,
and many other elements of nature. There is Another Sky: Poetic Devices Metaphor: The
poem’s name itself is a metaphor.
G. Theme: Dickinson addresses this theme and others, such as time, aging, and change
within the fourteen lines of this sonnet. ‘There is another sky’ by Emily Dickinson is a
clever and metaphor -rich poem that depicts the poet’s writing as a “garden” with
“unfading flowers”.

1. Serene: peaceful, calm
2. Austin: Emily’s younger
3. Frost: When temperature is below 0C a thin layer of ice forms on the ground and other surfaces
4. Unfading: brigth, colourful

🌷Title: The Fisherman and the Jinni Outline

🌷Background:
"The Fisherman and the Jinnee" is a tale from Muslim folklore. It is a frame story within "The
Thousand and One Nights", which is a collection of folktales from the 14th to the 9th century.
🌷Theme:
The theme of “The Fisherman and the Jinnee” is to not be gullible. The Jinnee, as well as the
fisherman, both get fooled by each other. The Jinnee is doubted by the fisherman that he can
not fit back into the pot. To prove it, the Jinnee returned into the pot and is trapped once
again.
🌷Genre:
Fiction
🌷Plot: A fisherman is fishing on the shores in an attempt to catch fish for his wife and kids.
On his forth cast, he reels in a golden lamp. He polishes it off only to have a Jinnee magically
appear from it. The Jinnee atttempts to kill the fisherman, but is eventually tricked to go back
into the lamp.
🌷Point of View:
The tale is a frame story within "The Thousand and One Nights." The story is narrated by
Scheherazade. This makes 3rd person limited.
🌷Setting:
The story takes place on a riverbed in the Middle East. It takes place during the 9th Century.
🌷Main Characters:
The main character is a nameless fisherman. He is a humble man trying to catch food for his
family. He is a cunning man, as he is able to trick the Jinnee into going back into his lamp.
🌷Conflict:
The Jinnee wants to kill the fisherman for releasing him. The conflict is external because it is
between two seperate beings.
🌷Resolution:
The fisherman is finally able to trick the Jinnee back into his lamp. Once in, the fisherman
corks up the lamp.
🌷 Critical Analysis:
The message is to be careful what you wish for and to never trust Jinnees. There is a
recurring motif of hunting/fishing. The irony of this story is that the "Wise" Jinnee was tricked
by a simple fisherman.
🌷Evaluation:

2. Did you like the story? Why or why not?
3. Would you encourage others to read this story? Why or why not?
