choosing the right and suitable fabric for the project.

Discuss the different tools/ materials needed in the project.
Here are the commonly used sewing tools and supplies:
1. Needle - This is a pointed material with an eye to carry thread and
sews fabrics together.
2. Thread - This is used to sew fabrics.
3. Dressmaker’s pin - These are used to hold pieces of fabrics
temporarily.
4. Needle threader - This helps to pull the thread through the eye of the
needle.
5. Pin cushion and emery bag – it is used to keep needles and pins in
place when not in use.

6. Thimble - This protects the middle finger from being pricked when
pushing the needle through the cloth.
7. Ruler - This is used to measure and mark lines on a fabric or pattern.
8. Tape Measure - This is used to take body measurements as well as
cloth and other materials.
9. Metal Gauge - This is a movable marker that measures short
distances such as distance between buttons and buttonholes, pleats and
hems.
10. Tailor’s chalk - This is a hard square wax used to mark the
seamlines in fabric.
11. Tracing Paper - This is used with the tracing wheel to transfer
marks from the pattern to the cloth.
12. Tracing wheel - This is a marking tool with saw tooth blade used to
transfer the marks in the pattern to the fabric.
13. Scissors - These are used to trim pieces of fabric.
14. Dressmaking shears - These are big scissors used for cutting
fabrics.
15. Pinking shears - These are scissors with serrated blades or zigzag
edges used for cutting fabric edge to prevent it from fraying.

Different Kinds Of Fabric


1. Cotton - This cloth is smooth, durable and absorbent. It is
appropriate for tropical climate.

2. Wool - This cloth is suitable for the cold season.

3. Silk - This is an expensive fabric. It is quite difficult to cut and sew because of its
fine, smooth and lustrous texture.

4. Synthetic - Made from man-made fibers woven into different fabrics like nylon,
rayon, dacron and banlon, this cloth can be easily washed and dried.

5. Linen - This fabric comes from the flax plant. It is the oldest kind of fabric. It is
cool and absorbent.

In sewing, you must make sure that all the things you
need are within your reach. Your sewing kit should contain
the necessary measuring, marking, cutting tools and other
sewing aids. All these should always be in good working
condition so that work becomes efficient and production
output are of good quality. The right choice of materials as

G. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills daily


The supplies/materials and tools needed for the project is very
important. Here are some tips on how to take of the sewing tools to last
longer.

1. Keep all your tools in a sewing box. They should be arranged


neatly.
2. Pass needles and pins in and out of an emery bag to remove the rust stains on
them. Always keep them in a pin cushion.
3. Choose good quality sewing tools, especially shears.
4. Wipe your scissors dry before keeping it. Apply some oil on it and have it
sharpened when needed.
5. Keep your tape measure folded or rolled when not in use.
6. Always put your sewing box in a safe place and out of children’s place.

In preparing a project in sewing household linen it is important
to make sure that the project will be successful.
But to make the project success, one should consider
identifying the supply/materials and tools one should use for the
project.
