I. READING COMPREHENSION (25 POINTS

Animals and Us
by Joyce Simpson
A few generations ago, it was totally normal to watch performing animals. Whether you went to
a circus, or a zoo, or even sat at home watching TV adverts, you could see animals performing amusing
tricks. Without a doubt, the adverts from the 1970s, where monkeys were dressed in suits and dresses
and served tea, were the worst. To my shame, I even remember laughing with them, thinking how silly
the monkeys looked.
Now, as well as most people, I realise that adverts like these were in bad taste. However, in spite
of the work done by animal rights groups, things are still not that much better yet. Whether they are used
in experiments for medicine or testing make-up, or worse, for our own entertainment, animals are
obviously not really living the lives that they are supposed to live. In fact, their lives are often very
miserable.
For some reason, we all believe that some lives are worth more than others. We think that the life
of an animal is nothing compared to our own. This allows us not to feel guilty when we make animals
suffer and use them for our own purposes.
Also, we think that some animals deserve to live more than others. We consider our pets like
family members but we are rarely bothered about eating the meat of other animals. Such an attitude is
strange when you think about it. But unfortunately, most of us prefer not to; otherwise, we would have to
change not just our attitudes, but our way of life too.
It is possible that in the future we will respect all animals in the same way. But this will only
happen through education and the efforts of people who really want to do something to change the way
we think.
