Matrices Olevel Cala

This document describes a CALA (Competency and Skills-based Learning Assessment) in mathematics for O-level students. The CALA involves creating and working with matrices to represent household spending data for two families. Students will create a 3x2 matrix to store the families' weekly spending on bread, mealie meal, and eggs. They will then create a 2x2 matrix for the families' reduced weekly bread and mealie meal spending. Students must find the determinant and inverse of the 2x2 matrix, and determine the number of loaves one family would buy if the matrix is singular. The CALA assesses students' skills in creating, naming, and working with matrices.

COMPETENCES AND SKILLS

 Critical thinking
 Observation

BACKGROUND

Two families in your residential area want to store information on how they spent their
money on daily expenses. You were asked to record and present their expenses in a
rectangular way (matrices).

THE CALA

The CALA has two parts. You are required to attempt both parts.

PART A

 A certain family need 10 loaves, 5kilogrammes of mealie-meal and 20 eggs in a week,

let the family be family x
 Another family need 12 loaves, 3kilogrammes of mealie meal and 15 eggs in a week,
let the family be y
 Arrange the given information in matrix form such that your matrix will be a 3by2
matrix
 What do you understand by a 3by2 matrix

PART B

The 2 families decided to reduce expenses on their breakfast. They told the supplier not to
supply eggs anymore, but only supply mealie meal and bread.

 Create a matrix on how they will spend their money in a week such that loaves of
bread will be on the first row and mealie meal on the second row.
 Name the order of matrix which you have created.
 Find the determinant of the matrix you created
 Find the inverse of the matrix.
 Given that family y decided to reduce number of loaves they eat in a week, find the
number of loaves they will need if the matrix of the 2 matrix is a singular matrix.

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED

The facilitator will assess your ability to :

 Create a matrix
 Name the order of matrix which you have created
 Multiply a matrix with a scalar.
 Calculate determinant of a 2by 2 matrix
 Calculate the inverse of a 2by2 matrix
 Find the missing value of a singular matrix
