2. Review

In the previous lesson, you have familiarized the

characteristics, strengths and weaknesses, and
kinds of qualitative research and further realized the
importance of research, particularly the qualitative
type, in addressing problems across different fields.

Can anyone name the Characteristics of Qualitative

research?
Sir, Qualitative Research (is)….

 Qualitative research is more difficult

to analyze.
Excellent!
 Qualitative research is time
Although qualitative research is time consuming and consuming
o difficult to analyze, it complements quantitative
research as it can provide rich data about the
issue/problem being studied…

In conducting a qualitative type of research on

different fields such as business, education,
medicine, etc., there are six (6) widely used
qualitative research kinds

providing meaning to understand an existing
phenomenon. With this, the perspectives,
expressions, and activities of the participants play a
vital role to unveiling the local context across
different fields. The development in any fields such
as in education, business, medical and health allied
services, etc. is made possible by means of
qualitative research. Which is why you must be
equipped with full understanding of essential
concepts that describe qualitative research before
conducting such type of investigation.
Remember that having an in-depth understanding of
these concepts will make your qualitative research
journey be guided and later be successful.

3. Motivation
I have here a set of words in the box…
What can you notice with these words?

Are you ready? Now everyone listen to the

directions. I will be grouping you into 5 groups
by counting 1 to 5 starting from the first row…
Students count from 1 to 5…
Now that we have determined your group
number.. you will now have to sit in your
respective areas. After forming a circle among
your group… choose who you want to become
your group leader and write your names in a
sheet of paper.
For every activity we will be doing you will
accumulate scores for the whole group and the
group with the highest score at the end of the
activity will be our declared winner for the day.
The score your group will get will be added to
your performance score.

So what must be done to succeed as a group?

Very good. You have to work together to aim for Sir, teamwork and cooperation.
the win for today.

Here’s the deal… A question will be flashed for

about 15 seconds and within the given time,
every group must be able to correctly guess the
word being described. In 10 seconds, you
should be able write your answer in your sheet
of paper. One sheet of paper only per group. So
work cooperatively to win.

Is everyone ready for the game?

Let’s begin! Yes sir!

4. Presentation of the Lesson

You may probably observe that you are living in a

society where random changes occur. In a similar way, you
may also see that problems are everywhere – from hearing
news in a television or seeing timely posted issues in a
social media site up to your daily common struggles as a
student such as a feeling of difficulty in answering a test or
difficulty in transportation going to school and the like. With
such circumstances, we may say that this is how the society
where we are living is designed to – we constantly deal with
these inevitable problems.
But the question is what can we do to solve these
problems?

You’re right! Sir, by conducting research to thoroughly

investigate the causes and underlying
problems of such situations..
But before doing so, what must be the first step to get
to solve this problem? Sir, by first identifying what the problem
is about.
Very good.. so after identifying the problem?
You to first _______ what?

That’s correct. That is the initial step in conducting Sir, formulate the research title.
the research.

Now that you have acquired some basic knowledge of

Research as a discipline, it is time for you to step forward by
initiating a self-observation of the happenings in the
community where you belong. Your journey in Research
continues by looking for a problem appropriate to your
needs, interests, and understanding towards the issue.

A. Activity

difficulty can be possibly encountered by anyone. Now, as a
senior high school student, it is undeniable that you are
encountering problems as well.

Perhaps, you may also relate yourself with the

situations of the characters from the selection whose
problem may arise from issues and concerns regarding time
management, study habit, motivation, and the like which
later can affect the academic performance.
As a starting student-researcher, you must remember
that a situation that brings you a feeling of discomfort or
something that you find as challenging and difficult can be
considered as a source of problem. Such a problem may
later help you to design your study which primary aims are to
investigate, explore, and understand the phenomenon. The
findings then can be used to suggest what potential solution
may address the problem.

We have said earlier that we need to first identify the

research problem… but what is the Research Problem
anyway?

The Research Problem

(Group reads in chorus….)

In starting with a research project,
the researcher must have a clear
problem in mind. Basically, a research
problem refers to a statement that
promptly suggests for conducting an
investigation. Moreover, a research
problem to be designed must deal with
some concerns in a particular field that
may need an improvement or a solution.
The researcher must also observe gaps
in existing scholarly literature, theories,
and practices in order to come up with a
good and relevant research problem.
The next question is… where can we derive the This designed problem then will serve as
research problem? What are the sources of the problem? a guide to know what kind of research
study will be most suitable to address the
That correct! perceived concern.

This time we’ll go back to our game… give what word

is being described by the following… Sir, we need to determine the source of
the problem.
Sources of Research Problem
There is a need for a socially relevant problem when the
researcher will attempt to conduct a study. Hence, it is said
that identifying and designing a research problem is quite a
challenging task.

Familiarity with the potential sources, meanwhile, may help

the researcher to come up with a good research problem. As
cited from Sacred Heart University Library (2020), four (4)
varied sources can be considered.

1. _________. Existing social philosophies and

generalizations which the researcher is familiar with
may be of a great help to design a research problem.
The researcher may observe if there is a gap between
theory and practice. Difference between what is said by
the elders and what the youngsters see and observe
may be a potential source of a problem. 1. Theory

2. ______________. Consultation with the people who

have direct experiences in a field of interest may
provide the researcher an idea of what relevant
problem he/she may investigate. Practitioners such as
teachers, social workers, health care providers, etc. are
considered to be a good source of problem since they
are directly experiencing difficulties and challenges
which are needed to be addressed. 2. Practitioners
3. _________________. Daily experiences can provide
the researcher an idea of what problem that needs a
solution. Observation on what is happening in the
community may allow him/her to see the common
concerns of people or institutions which may be
subjected for investigation.

4. ____________________. An extensive and thorough 3. Personal experience

review of literature and studies relevant to the problem
interest of the researcher may enable him/her to come
up with a potential study. Through reviewing other
available researches, the researcher may be able to
determine gaps in knowledge and to subject them for
replication. Thus, a good research problem will be
ensured. 4. Relevant literature

Very good! Great guessing.

Let’s come now to the…

Considerations in Formulating the Research Problem

As cited from the book of Cristobal and Cristobal
(2017), there are criteria which should be considered by the
researcher in order to arrive with a good research problem.
Here they adopted the proposed criteria of Barrientos-Tan
(1997) from the book entitled A Research Guide in Nursing
Education. These are further subdivided into external and
internal criteria.

1. External Criteria
a. __________ The research problem must carry
“newness.” With this, its practical value would be easily
perceived.
b. _________________ A research problem, when is
subjected to a further investigation, requires data from the
target subjects. Hence, the researcher must ensure that
there will be available participants who are capable of (Groups does the activity and

students, and parents, should be considered by the
researcher in what particular problem will be investigated.
Each member plays a vital role in the conduct of the study.
Hence, the research problem should be clearly perceived as
beneficial once it is subjected for investigation. In addition,
securing permission among the said members must be done c. Support of the academic

d. _______________________________________
Necessary common devices such as computers and
telephones which will be used in undertaking a study should
be considered. Likewise, other needed materials required by
the research problem should be checked if they are
available and sufficient.
e. ____________________ A research problem, when is
subjected to a study, must not pose any unethical demands
most especially on the part of the research participants. d. Availability and adequacy of
facilities and equipment.
2. Internal Criteria

With this, the undertaking will be possibly accomplished in a

d. _____________________. It is also important that the
researcher should consider a research problem which

it must not be a sort of an expensive undertaking. c. Time factor.

problem should not put the researcher in danger. The
proposed study should be safe not only to the participants
but moreover to the researcher himself/herself. Physical and
mental health of the researcher must always be considered. d. Costs and returns.

good research title that will best represent the problem and
the study itself in general. As cited from Sacred Heart
University Library (2020), a research title should help the
readers to see the main idea as well as the summary of the
whole study. Further, it usually contains fewest possible
words that can bring understanding of the content and the
purpose of the study among the readers.

Okay now.. What characterizes the research title?

(Group reads in chorus…)

Characteristics of a Research Title

As commonly observed, a
research title is the first one to be read
before proceeding to the other parts of
the research paper. Hence, it is really
important to know for the researcher
what makes a research title an effective
one in order to capture the interest of the
readers towards the problem to be
investigated. Here are some of the
characteristics of a research title that the
researcher should put into
considerations:
After considering the sources and criteria
of a good research problem, the next
thing to do is to create a research title
bearing in mind the criterion measures
that should exist in order to present a
good title. The things that need to be
considered in creating a research title,
according to Broto (n.d.), are the
following:

In Form:
1. It should not exceed three to four lines.
2. It must be written in an inverted
pyramid.
3. It must not be more than 20 to 24
substantive words.
4. All words must be in capital letters.
5. No abbreviation and acronym should
be used.
6. It must be arranged in thought
phrases.
7. It must not be enclosed in quotation
marks.
8. It must be simple and straight to the
point.
9. No syllabication of words.
10. It must not indicate the time frame of
the study.
11. Use the font that is prescribed by the
school, and must be uniform.

In Content/Substance:
1. It must be along one’s field of
specialization.
2. It must be novel/new or must have
newness.
3. It must possess originality.
4. It must be interesting.
5. It must be eye-catching.
6. It must be thought-provoking.
7. It must answer the questions who,
what and where (in case of correlational
study).
8. It must seek solution to felt-need
problem.
9. It must be timely.
10. It must be clear and specific
11. It must excite the reader’s intellectual
curiosity to look further into the study.
12. It must not be wordy.
13. It gives a very specific and accurate
index of the study.
14. Avoid the use of “A Study of” or “A
Here are examples: Comparative Study of” or “An
Investigation of”

HIGH SCHOOL

Now how do you think does this title follow the

Characteristics you have just identified?

Examples of Qualitative Research Title

Similar with all other parts of a research paper, (Students answers will vary…)
the title must be carefully formulated. Other existing
research titles may serve as a basis especially for beginning
researchers. Below are the examples of title in qualitative
research:

1. The ‘Need to Transcend’: A Phenomenological

Study on the Lived Experiences of Millennial
Teachers (Lacdo-O et al., 2018)
2. The Educated Citizen: Cultural and Gender Capital
in the Schooling of Aetas’ Children in the
Municipality of Janiuay (Moralista & Delariarte,
2014)
3. This Too Shall Pass: A Grounded Theory Study of
Filipino Cancer Survivorship (de Guzman et al.,
2012)
4. Local Studies Centers: Transforming History,
Culture and Heritage in the Philippines (Perez &
Templanza, 2012)
5. President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s Political Speeches:
A Critical Discourse Analysis (Remorosa, 2018)

Now that you have already known the considerations

in selecting a research problem and in formulating its
corresponding title, there is no doubt that you may begin to
propose a study by clearly indicating the problem with its
corresponding title that is highly relevant to your need,
experience, interest, and capability as a student researcher

C. Abstraction

Directions: Write YES if the given situation from each item

indicates good practice in the selection of the problem or in
the formulation of the title and NO if not. Write your answer
on.

1. Harold conducts a study which has already been done in Answers:

his school with similar objective and participants. 1. No
2. Jessica pursues her study because she observes that
there are existing research gaps in her field of interest. 2. Yes
3. Gerald plans to consult the SPED teachers in his
community in order to know the focus of his study regarding 3. Yes
the life of SPED students.
4. Joana secures the approval of the school administrator 4. Yes
before subjecting her perceived problem into a study.
5. The research problem proposed by Ulysses requires more 5. No
time and may exceed the target time frame when it is
subjected into a study. 6. Yes
6. In the formulation of his research title, Willy includes only
essential words and variables of the study. 7. No
7. To make her research title appears brief, April used the
abbreviation of a terminology. 8. No
8. Bea capitalizes all the first letters of each word appearing
in her research title. 9. Yes
9. Xian includes his participants and the setting of the study
in his research title. 10. Yes
10. In order to indicate clearly the context of her study, Olivia
used a subtitle.

Now overall, from what you have learned from research so

far?
Why do conduct research? And what makes research so
important to us?

Sir, research is so important to us

because it is what paves way for change
and development to happen in every
aspect of our lives we live into…
Research allows innovation and
technological development to take place.
Very good. I like how you say how it makes change possible.
Also sir.. its what makes our lives easy
It is said that change is the only constant thing in this world and our work efficient.
and we must adapt to it. As life changes, we must appreciate
and value everything that helps us in our journey.. or dear
families and friends. We may face many challenges but
there is one constant truth that we have to always remember
and that is the fact that we have people who are our side to
help us grow and succeed.. we have our families.. we have
our friends and we have our teachers with us here in
school… We must appreciate them for making a difference
in lives.

D. Application
Now because you learned so much from lesson.. its
time for our next activity….
Directions: Think of a problem (e.g., societal issue – any
problem in your society you think requires answers or
solutions.) which you can relate to. Then, formulate three
qualitative research title that will seek to answer the problem
being perceived. Your answer will be graded based on this
rubric: Be guided by our discussion and the examples
provided. This to be done by group. Write your work on a
sheet of cartolina. You will be given only 15 mins to do this
activity and after, you will present your outputs to class and
the rest of the group will have to comment on your outputs.
