1) The study aimed to identify the causes of tardiness among intermediate students in Divine Word College of Bangued. The objectives were to determine if there were differences in identification of causes based on gender, socioeconomic status, grade level, location, and cultural background. 2) There were no significant differences found between groups in their identification of causes. The conclusion was that tardiness remains common among secondary students in the area. Recommendations included enforcing rules around technology use, banning children from hawking, and providing scholarships. 3) A review of literature on student tardiness behaviors and strategies for dealing with it was conducted. The variety of potential causes that could contribute to tardiness were identified. Understanding

The results of this

importance of
organizing the school
day more predictably
and with a better
structure for the
students. Such
predictability can be
expressed by starting
the school day at the
same time and in the
same manner every
single day. Further,
the staff needs to
agree on a common
policy on handling
tardiness. The result
also indicates that
schools must further
develop their
effectiveness in
relation to both
students and parents.
That is, they must

and in relation to
students’ interests and

with tardiness
especially, it is
important to interpret
this behavior as a
signal understood in a
greater context.

cannot be substituted for late –
coming, the latter means partial
absence for a few hours or period in a
day and the former refers to total
absence for a particular lesson or in a

‘partial’ meaning that the students
may be absent for part of the day or
missing out on some periods (Moseki,
2004) or ‘full’ where the student is
absent for an entire day (Moseki,
2004). In South Africa, much
work has been dedicated to student’s
absenteeism in schools which in
context literally means that a learner
is not
at school for the entire day (Mashiane,
1997; Whitney, 1998; Moseki, 2004).

recommended:
1. Teachers should
come to school on
time to be a good
example to the
studchts. You can't
start late and ask the
students to show up
on time. When you
start class late you
encourage students to
do the same in return,
2. Start Class
Powerfully. Begin
with a fun activity or
game to engage the
students. As the late
students come
walking in, they will
have to wait until it is
over and miss out on
the fun. This may help
motivate them to
arrive on time the next
day.
3. Students that are

residing that is far
from should wake up
early to avoid traffic.
Teachers should give
prizes to those
students who arrived
early in school to
motivate the other
students to come to
school early.
