This document contains a physics test from Fourrah Bay College in Sierra Leone. The test has two questions. The first question asks students to define terms related to momentum and impulse, and calculate impulse and force from a jumping scenario. The second question asks students to state Newton's laws of motion and calculate weight, normal force, and other forces on a box being pushed and pulled on a table.

UNIVERSITY OF SIERRA LEONE PHY 211 (Classical Mechanics) – TEST (Take g=9.8 m s−2 ¿ 1(a) Define the following terms: (i) Law of conservation of linear momentum (ii) Impulse (b) (i) Calculate the impulse experienced when a 70-kg person lands on firm ground after jumping from a height of 3.0 m. (ii) Estimate the average force exerted on the person’s feet y the ground if the landing is stiff-legged, and again. (iii) With bent legs With stiff legs, assume the body moves 1.0 cm during impact, and when the legs are bent, about 50 cm. 2(a) State the Newton’s laws of motion (b) Your uncle has given you a special gift, a box of mass 10 kg with a mystery surprise inside and the box rest on a smooth horizontal surface of the table. (i) determine the weight of the box and the normal force exerted on it by the table. (ii) Now your cousin pushes down on the box with a force of 40 N. determine the normal force on the box. (iii) If your cousin pulls upward on the box with a force of 40 N, what now is the normal force exerted on the box by the table? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS FOURAH BAY COLLEGE UNIVERSITY OF SIERRA LEONE PHY 211 (Classical Mechanics) – TEST (Take g=9.8 m s−2 ¿ 1(a) Define the following terms: (i) Law of conservation of linear momentum (ii) Impulse (b) (i) Calculate the impulse experienced when a 70-kg person lands on firm ground after jumping from a height of 3.0 m.
