Calculation Note (Seismic)

This document provides details on the design and analysis of the Alhoussaini Private Residence in Tyre, Lebanon. It includes information on materials, loads, seismic analysis using the UBC 97 code, and modal analysis. The structure consists of a basement and two floors of concrete with a design strength of 25MPa. Seismic analysis was performed in both the X and Y directions under the UBC 97 code, resulting in base shears of 2081kN in X and 2247.54kN in Y. Dynamic analysis identified the first four modes as most significant.

Alhoussaini Private Residence – Arzoun

• General view

• Description of the project:

The structure is composed of a basement and two residential floors, located

in Tyre Lebanon.

• Design criteria:

- Concrete strength: f’c=25MPa.

- Reinforcement yield stress: Fy=420 Mpa

- Soil allowable bearing capacity: 300 KN/m2, a sub-grade reaction value

=36000 kN/m3 (joseph Bowles formula).

- Codes and norms: ACI 318-metric and UBC97.

- Software used for calculation: Robot Structural Analysis, Auto CAD.

• Loads:

Dead Loads

- Self-weight of the structure, (Calculated by the software)

- Super imposed dead load = 4.5 kN/m2.

Live Loads

- Live load = 2.5 kN/m2

- Water Pressure on water tanks, 10 kN/m3. On walls of water tank, the
density was multiplied by wall heights and applied as a triangular acting
along the wall’s height.

• Seismic Analysis under UBC 97 Code:

• Seismic: 0.2g equivalent to UBC97 (zone 2B), Soil profile type SC

• Drifts & Displacement:

According to UBC 97-Arcticle 1630.9.2,the inelastic displacement will be :

 M = 0.7 R S  M = 0.7  5.5 S (  S : Displacement due to seismic combination)

Results obtained showed that the maximum elastic drift is Ds = 1 cm in the X direction and Ds =
1.7cm in the Y direction under service load combinations.

The corresponding inelastic drift: Dm = 0.7 R Ds = 0.7 x 5.5 x 1.7 = 6.5 cm.
The maximum allowable limits for the inelastic drift permitted by the UBC code is : (taking into
account the lowest story height of the project= 355cm
Da = 0.02 h = 0.02* 330 cm = 6.6 cm > Dm. OK

300 kPa.

✓ Displacement:

✓ All values under service load combinations are less than 2.5cm (average allowable value for
