Elementary Students (Capstone Projects, and Master's Thesis, CSUMB)

The document discusses several factors that can influence academic stress in students: 1. Age - Academic stress declines with increasing age for undergraduates but rises again in the final year of study. 2. Gender - Females generally experience higher stress levels than males and different coping mechanisms. 3. Parental occupation - Students with parents in prestigious occupations tend to perform better academically but may experience higher stress levels. 4. Grade level - Both secondary and tertiary students commonly face stress from academic demands, which can negatively impact performance. It recommends creating supportive learning environments and effective stress management programs to help students develop coping skills to handle academic pressure.

A.

Age
According to Bomarito, A. (2017). Reclaiming Childhood: Effects of Homework on
Elementary Students [Capstone Projects, and Master's Thesis, CSUMB].
• Schoolwork has been found to be not only
Academically stressful, but physically,
Emotionally, and psychologically stressful.

• Children are more vulnerable to stress because

They have not yet to develop appropriate coping
Mechanisms.

According to Onolemhenhen, P. E. (2020). ANALYSIS OF AGE AND LEVEL OF STUDY

AS FACTORS IN ACADEMIC STRESS EXPERIENCED AMONG UNDERGRADUATES OF
PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES IN EDO STATE, NIGERIA. European Journal of Education
Studies, 1. https://doi.org/http://dx.doi.org/10.46827/ejes.v7i11.3444

 Academic stress was found to decline with increasing age of students while
academic stress rises for undergraduates in their first year.

 Declines in the second and third year but rises again in the final year.
B. Sex

According to Calvarese, M. (2015). The Effect of Gender on Stress Factors: An

Exploratory Study among University Students. ResearchGate, 1-3.
https://doi.org/http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/socsci4041177

 When dealing with extensive workload. Females experience higher levels of

depression, frustration, and anxiety than their male counterparts when
reacting to stress caused by school works. However, more males tend to have
other psychological reactions different from those listed in the survey when
reacting to stress.

According Graves, B. S., Hall, M. E., Dias-Karch, C., Haischer, M. H., & Apter, C.
(2021). Gender differences in perceived stress and coping among college
students. PloS one, 16(8), e0255634.
https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0255634
 The study found that there were gender differences in coping mechanisms
and perceived stress levels among undergraduate students. Females
experienced higher levels of stress than males, and can be useful for
university faculty and administration to create stress-reduction strategies,
especially as workload increases. It is recommended that more effective
stress management and adaptive sessions be incorporated into classes,
particularly at the freshman and sophomore level, to help students develop
successful life-long coping skills and handle stressful situations.
C. Parent’s Occupation

According to Usaini, M. I., & Abubakar, N. B. (2015). The Impact of Parents’

Occupation on Academic Performance of Secondary School Students in
Kuala Terengganu. Multilingual Academic Journal of Education and Social
Sciences, 3(1), 91–99.

 This study highlights that students from parents with prestigious

occupations tend to perform better than those from less prestigious
occupations. The findings of this research suggest that parental occupation
can impact a child's academic success. However, it's also important to
consider the stress levels that come with having parents in high-pressure
jobs. Students with parents in prestigious occupations may experience
higher stress levels, which can affect their academic performance
negatively.\

D. Grade Level
According to Pascoe, M. C., Hetrick, S. E., & Parker, A. G. (2019). The impact
of stress on students in secondary school and higher education. Taylor and
Francis Online, 25, 104-112.
https://doi.org/10.1080/02673843.2019.1596823

 This study implies that Secondary and tertiary education students commonly
encounter numerous stressors that are related to academic demands. Past
studies have shown that this type of stress can have adverse effects such as
lowered academic performance, reduced motivation, and an increased
likelihood of dropping out of school. These negative impacts often arise as a
result of the workload placed on students.
E. Social environment in school

According to Patrick, P. (2016). Impact of Classroom Environment on Student

Academic Performance in Basic Science [Bachelor Thesis].
https://www.grin.com/document/1011211

 Junior Secondary School Students recognize the importance of a positive

classroom environment in developing essential skills like critical thinking,
problem-solving, self-discipline, leadership, confidence, and honesty. They
emphasize the significance of a supportive environment in enhancing their
self-confidence, punctuality, teamwork, character development, and
adaptability. To alleviate the burden of workload on students, it is crucial to
create a learning environment that fosters engagement and motivation,
enabling them to develop the necessary skills to handle academic pressure
effectively.

According to Kaczmarek, M., & Trambacz-Oleszak, S. (2021). School-Related

Stressors and the Intensity of Perceived Stress Experienced by Adolescents in
Poland. International journal of environmental research and public health, 18(22),
11791. https://doi.org/10.3390/ijerph182211791

 Higher stress reactivity during adolescence is a vulnerability marker of

exposure to various environmental stressors.
F. Social Environment at Home
According to Hendrix, E. (2019, December 19). HOW YOUR SURROUNDINGS
AFFECT THE WAY YOU STUDY. Retrieved February 28, 2023, from
https://www.ucas.com/connect/blogs/how-your-surroundings-affect-way-you-
study#:~:text=Several%20factors%20can%20affect%20learning,a%20higher
%20overall%20learning%20ability.

 This article says that the impact of a poor learning environment on students
can be significant and lead to increased stress levels. Uncomfortable seating,
inadequate lighting, and distracting noise can cause students to feel
physically and mentally uneasy, leading to stress and frustration. In turn, high
levels of stress can interfere with their ability to focus, retain information,
and learn effectively.

 On the other hand, a positive learning environment can reduce stress levels
and promote a sense of calm, making it easier for students to concentrate
and engage in their studies. Thus, it is essential to create a conducive learning
environment that can help alleviate stress and enhance the learning
experience.

According to Eeyler, J. (2022, March 7). Grades Are at the Center of the Student
Mental Health Crisis. Retrieved February 28, 2023, from
https://www.insidehighered.com/blogs/just-visiting/grades-are-center-student-
mental-health-crisis

 This study has proven that Grades are causing physical, emotional, and
psychological harm to students, contributing to the mental health crisis in
young people. Anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation have increased due
to the pressure and stress of grades from parents and teachers. Research
suggests that this issue is worsening and requires sustained intervention. It is
necessary to examine the harm caused by grades.

I. Co-Curricular Activities
https://ojs.aaresearchindex.com/index.php/AAJMRA/article/view/6026
 I cant open the link but the answer is there. I feel it
According to Rahman, S. R., Islam, A., Akash, P. P., Parvin, M., Moon, N. J., & Nur,
F. N. (2021). Effects of co-curricular activities on student's academic performance
by machine learning [Current Research in Behavioral Sciences, Department of
Computer Science & Engineering, Daffodil International University, Bangladesh].
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.crbeha.2021.100057.
 Co-curricular activities benefit students by providing opportunities to apply
their knowledge and skills, develop new abilities and interests, and
strengthen their social and organizational skills. Students may acquire
practical expertise by taking part in co-curricular activities related to their
topic.

of-students/

While co-curricular activities can be beneficial for students, they may also
sometimes be associated with stress. Students who participate in many
extracurricular activities alongside their academic coursework may find
themselves feeling overwhelmed and burnt out. This can lead to feelings of stress
and anxiety, especially if they feel like they are not able to keep up with their
commitments or perform at the level they desire.
Additionally, some co-curricular activities can be very competitive, and students
may feel pressure to perform well in order to gain recognition or win awards. This
pressure can sometimes lead to unhealthy levels of stress and anxiety, which can
have negative impacts on a student's mental health and well-being.
Overall, while co-curricular activities can be valuable learning experiences for
students, it's important for students to find a healthy balance between their
academic work and extracurricular commitments in order to avoid excessive
stress and burnout.
