ICE Morse Test

The document describes conducting a Morse test on a multi-cylinder engine to determine the indicated power of each cylinder. Key steps include: measuring engine speed and load with all cylinders active, then cutting fuel to individual cylinders while maintaining constant speed; indicated power of each cylinder can then be calculated using load measurements. The test aims to determine indicated power without using indicator diagrams. Results are tabulated showing indicated power values for each cylinder and combined, along with mechanical efficiency. The conclusion is that Morse testing can indicate multi-cylinder engine power without indicator diagrams.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE

1. Ensure that necessary electrical connections are made for measuring devices.

2. Remove initial load from the engine if it was loaded.

3. Fill the fuel in the fuel tank.

4. Start the water supply to calorimeter and engine jacket and maintain proper flow rate of
water to both, before starting the engine.

5. Start the engine and allow it to run for few minutes till it reaches stable
operating conditions.

6. Adjust the fuel supply and load on the dynamometer to bring engine at the required speed
(Test Speed) on which test is to be conducted.

7. Check the speed with tachometer and note it in the observation table.

8. Measure the load on the dynamometer and note it in observation table.

9. The speed and load measured in step 6 & 7 are for all the cylinders developing the power.

10. Cutoff the fuel supply of the cylinder no – 1 and adjust the load on the Dynamometer to
bring the engine to the test speed & allow it to stabilized & than note the speed and load
and record it in observation table.

11. Start the fuel supply of the cylinder no – 1 (all the cylinders are developing the power) &
allow it to run for short time.

12. Repeat the procedure mentioned in steps 9 & 10 for the remaining no of cylinders.

IP1 + IP2 + IP3 + IP4 = BP + (FP 1 + FP2 + FP3 +FP4) (I)

b. When fuel supply to Cylinder no - 1 is cut off then ,

IP2 + IP3 + IP4 = BP1 + (FP1 + FP2 + FP3 +FP4) (II)

c. When fuel supply to cylinder no - 2 is cut off then,

IP1 + IP3 + IP4 = BP2 + (FP1 + FP2 + FP3 +FP4) (III)

d. When fuel supply to cylinder no – 3 is cut off then

IP1 + IP2 + IP4 = BP3 + (FP1 + FP2 + FP3 +FP4) (IV)

e. When fuel supply to cylinder no – 4 is cut off then

IP1 + IP2 + IP3 = BP4 + (FP1 + FP2 + FP3 +FP4) (V)
