Lec - 01 - Introduction To FMHM

The document provides an introduction to fluid mechanics. It defines fluid mechanics as the science dealing with fluids at rest or in motion and their interaction with boundaries. A fluid is defined as any substance in a liquid or gas phase that can continuously deform under shear stress. The document outlines some basic concepts including the distinction between statics and dynamics, Newton's law of viscosity which relates shear stress and rate of deformation for fluids, and the difference between kinematic and dynamic viscosity. It also briefly mentions the motion of fluids under applied forces.

Quick Revision
Basic Concept
• Mechanics is the oldest physical science that deals with
both stationery and moving boundaries under the
influence of forces. The branch of the mechanics that
deals with bodies at rest is called statics while the
branch that deals with bodies in motion is called
dynamics.
• Fluid Mechanics is the science that deals with behavior
of fluids at rest (fluid statics) or in motion (fluid
dynamics) and the interaction of fluids with solids or
other fluids at the boundaries.
Basic Concept
• A substance in liquid / gas phase is referred as ‘fluid’.
Distinction between a solid & a fluid is made on the basis
of substance’s ability to resist an applied shear
(tangential) stress that tends to change its shape.
• A solid can resist an applied shear by deforming its
shape whereas a fluid deforms continuously under the
influence of shear stress, no matter how small is its
shape.
• Any shear stress applied to a fluid, no matter how small,
will result in motion of that fluid.
Basic Concept
Motion of Fluid
• When force F is applied, exerts
Shear Stress F/A
• No slip at bottom fixed plate

Shear Stress  =

• The relation between shear stress and rate of angular
deformation for 1–D flow of fluid is called as “Newton’s Law of
Viscosity .
