MDRAW Lab MODULE Rev 3

This document outlines a course on maritime drawing and diagrams. The 54-hour course teaches students to draw sketches of shipboard machinery parts applying concepts of technical drawing. It covers drawing templates, lettering, orthographic projections, sectional views, and dimensioning of parts. Assessment includes practical exercises and tests. Instruction uses simulators and involves drawing solids, components, and annotating drawings with dimensions according to technical standards. Instructors must have experience in maritime training or assessment and certification in technical drawing courses.

TOPIC 01
LINE WORKS AND LETTERING

Theory
Skill in lettering is a basic requirement for a student in drawing. He must be
exposed to the lettering activities to orient him on the quality standard in printing
letters. Lettering is used as a form of communication. As applied in drawing, it
adds beauty if it is well-printed. Likewise, it can destroy the appearance of the
drawing once it is not done well.
There are four group of letters used in lettering: Roman, Gothic,
Text, and Italic letters.

 The Rule of Stability of letters

This refers to the standard rules to be considered in printing the
letters particularly on the following:
1. Upper Case letters. They are letters which are printed in capital form. Three
guidelines are cap line, waist line, and base line.

2. Lower Case Letters. These are the letters which are printed in small letters
printed with the use of four guidelines such as cap line, waist line, base line, and
dropped line.

 Alphabet of Lines in Technical Drawing

Lines in technical drawings are part of a specialized graphic

language that is standardized throughout industry. Each type of line has a very
precise symbolic meaning. Correct usage of this "alphabet of lines" is essential
whether you use traditional drafting methods or Computer Aided Design (CAD).
Line weight is the thickness of the line. Construction lines and guide
lines are very light, easily erased lines used to block in the main layout. Visible
lines are the edges or "outlines" of an object. They are drawn as solid lines with a
thick/heavy weight. All other lines contrast with the visible lines by having either a
thinner weight and/or a combination of dashes

TOPIC 02
FIRST AND THIRD ANGLE ORTHOGRAPHIC PROJECTION – SOLIDS

Theory
The word orthographic means to draw at right angles and is derived
from the Greek words: ORTHOS - straight, rectangular, upright and GRAPHOS -
written, drawn. Orthographic projection is a parallel projection. It is used as an
unambiguous and accurate way of providing information, primarily for
manufacturing and detail design.

 First Angle Projection

Orthographic projection is a graphical method used to represent
three-dimensional structures or objects into different perspective projection
images called views. The orthographic view typically consists of the top view,
front view, and the side view. First angle projection is one of the methods used
for orthographic projection drawings and is approved internationally except the
United States. In this projection method, the object is placed in the first quadrant
and is positioned in front of the vertical plane and above the horizontal plane.

 Third Angle Projection

This is another perspective projection method used to represent
three-dimensional objects using a series of two-dimensional views. In third angle
projection, the 3D object to be projected is placed in the third quadrant and is
positioned behind the vertical plane and below the horizontal plane. Unlike in first
angle projection where the plane of projection is supposedly opaque, the planes
are transparent in third angle projection. This projection method is mainly used in
the United States and Japan stipulates the use of third angle projection schema
for industrial designs for product fabrication.

TOPIC 03
THREE-DIMENSIONAL ILLUSTRATIONS USING ISOMETRIC PROJECTION

Theory
Isometric projection is a type of pictorial projection. Isometric
means equal measure. In this isometric projection, all the plane surfaces and the
edges formed of these plane surfaces should be equally inclined to the metric
plane. Metric plane is the same horizontal plane which is used in orthographic
projection.

To represent the three dimensions (length, breadth and height) of

the object, there are three axes known as ISOMETRIC AXES. To start an isometric
drawing, a reference line (horizontal line) and the three axes (X, Y Z) are drawn by
taking an angle of 30° from the reference horizontal line. Z axis is a vertical line to
the horizontal line drawn from intersection point of X and Y axes.

TOPIC 04
SECTIONS AND SECTIONAL VIEWS

Theory
Sectional views show how an object would look if a cutting plane or
saw pass through the object and the part in front of the cutting plane or saw is
removed. Sectional views are used when important hidden details are in the
interior of an object. These details appear as hidden lines in one of the
orthographic projection. Sectional views facilitate the dimensioning.

Figure 1. Full Sectional Views

Types of Sections
The most common types of sectional views are as follows:

a. Full Section d. Broken-out Section

b. Half Section e. Revolved Section (Aligned Section)
c. Offset Section f. Removed Section (Detailed Section)

TOPIC 05
DIMENSIONING

Theory
Before an object can be built, complete information about both the
size and shape of the object must be available. The exact shape of an object is
communicated through orthographic drawings, which are developed following
standard drawing practices. The process of adding size information to a drawing is
known as dimensioning the drawing.

TOPIC 06
LIMITS AND FITS

Theory
To ensure that an assembly will function correctly, its component
parts must fit together in a predictable manner. Now, in practice, no component
can be manufactured to an exact size, and one of the problems facing the
designer is to decide the upper and lower limits of size which are acceptable for
each of the dimensions used to define shape and form and which will ensure
satisfactory operation in service. For example, a dimension of 10 ± 0.02 means
that a part will be acceptable if manufactured anywhere between the limits of
size of 9.98 mm and 10.02 mm.
