3. Computation of Dead Load and Live Load.
Before assuming Member sizes for Columns and Beam, we must have an idea of the gravity load to be
supported by the structure.
3.1 Dead Load Computation of Low bay.
For 8 meter bay spacing, Z section of 250x65x20x2.0 should be adequate with 1500mm C/C as purlin and
girt. 1500 mm is the usual purlin and girt spacing in PEB structure. The weight of this purlin is 5.7 kg/m.
The weight per square meter works out to be 5.7/1.5= 3.8 kg. The sheeting used are usually of weight
4.2 kg/square meter. The Clips to fix purlin are to the tune of 6 to 9% of weight of purlin and girt. The
bolts used are to the tune of 3 % of weight of purlin and girt. Another 50 % of sheeting weight may be
added for Gutter, Flashings, sag rod, Flange brace etc that are used in conjunction with sheeting. Under
the roof sheet, or on inner side of wall sheet insulation are provided, which may be assumed to 50 mm
with 48 kg/cum dense rock wool.

The Sheeting= 4.2 kg/sqm= 0.043 KN/sqm
The Purlin/Girt= 6 kg/sqm= 0.061 KN/sqm
Clips (5% of Girt/Purlin)= 0.3 kg/sqm= 0.003 KN/sqm
Bolts and nuts(3% of Purlin and Girt)= 0.21 kg/sqm= 0.002 KN/sqm
Insulation, 50 mm, 48 kg/cum= 2.4 kg/sqm= 0.024 KN/sqm

TOTAL= 0.20 KN/sqm
Say=0.2 kN/Sqm
3.2 Dead Load Computation of High bay
High bay consist concrete deck slab at various floor level. For office uses, total depth of 100 mm
concrete deck slab is adequate for a live load of 3 KN/square meter. Above that floor tiles are advised to
be fixed with tile adhesive, to keep the dead load minimum. But Mortar may be used. For this building,
10 mm tile fixed on 20mm mortar is assumed (Figure xx). The floors with heavy load, such as for
commercial complex, 150 mm thick metal deck slab should be used.
For the roof slab, membrane water proofing such as APP may be assumed. But for this case 100 mm
brick bat coba is assumed (Figure xx). The parapet wall shall be made of 75 mm thick RCC by taking
development length of bar into deck slab.
The wall system is assumed to be made of cold for steel section of 89x41x12x0.95 mm. On External side
of wall a 9 mm heavy duty fiber cement board is fixed on 6mm heavy duty board. On inner side, 8mm
normal fiber cement board is assumed on which 12.5 mm thick plaster board (Gypsum) board is laid.
The gap between the boards is filled with 50 mm rock wool insulation of density 48 kg/cum (Figure xx).

Also, the Office area would require Overhead tank for drinking water supply. Assuming, One person
would consume 100 square feet of office area, Number of person= Office Area/100=3No of Floors
x10x24x10.762/100=78 Peron. Assuming an overload of 20% for Visitor etc, Number of
Person=416x1.2=Say 100 Peron. Assuming 24 hours of Storage, 45 litres per head per day, Storage
requirement is 100x45x1=4500 Litres. Hence 1 PVC tank of 5000 Litres capacity may be provided for
office. Workshop Area would require water as per nature of work. Another 5000 litres is assumed for
work shop. (This information is usually provided by MEP Consultant, but at Times Engineer may require
it to calculate during preliminary design for estimation).
