4 Segments and Their Measure

Objectives
1. Understand the Measure of Segments.
2. Use Segment Postulates and Algebra to Find Segment
Lengths.

Postulate 1.4-1 Ruler Postulate
The points on a line can be paired, one-to-one, with
a real number. The real number that
corresponds to a point is called the
coordinate of the point.

The above allows us to calculate distance. The

distance between points A and B is the absolute
value of the difference of their coordinates.
We use the notation AB for distance or the length of
segment AB. AB =| x2 − x1 |

Measuring Lengths of Segments
Example

Find MP.
Solution
Recall that MP is the distance between points M and
P. Use the Ruler Postulate to find MP.
The coordinate of M is –11.
The coordinate of P is 5.
MP =| 5 − (−11) | =|16 |= 16
MP =| −11 − 5 | =| −16 |= 16
The distance is 16 units.

Congruent Segments
Two segments that have the same length are called
congruent segments. The symbol ≅ means
congruent.

We mark congruent segments in a figure with

exactly the same number of tick marks.

Determining if Segments Are
Example
Congruent
Given the figure, is segment BG ≅ segment AC?

Solution
Remember: If BG = AC, then segment BG ≅
segment AC.
BG = |3 – (–6)| = |9| = 9
AC = |–1 – (–10)| = |–1 + 10| = |9| = 9
BG = AC , then BG  AC.

Postulate 1.4-2 Segment Addition Postulate
If point B is between points A and C, then
AB + BC = AC. Also, if AB + BC = AC, then point B
is between points A and C.

Definitions
The midpoint of a segment is a point that divides,
or bisects, a segment into two congruent segments.
True statements:
• B is the midpoint of AC.
• Line m bisects AC.
• BD bisects AC.
• DB bisects AC. A line, ray, segment, or plane
that intersects a segment at its
• AB  BC.
midpoint is called a segment
• AB  BC. bisector.

Using the Segment Addition
Example
Postulate
If MP = 47 units, find MN and NP.
Solution
MN + NP = MP
(5x + 1) + (11x – 22) = 47
16x – 1 = 47
16x = 48
16 x 48
=
16 16
x =3

Using the Segment Addition
Example
Postulate
If MP = 47 units, find MN and NP.
Solution
Use the value of x to find
MN and NP.
MN = 5x + 1 = 5(3) + 1 = 16
NP = 11x – 2 = 11(3) – 2 = 31
Check: See that MP = 47.
16 + 31 = 47

Finding the Midpoint
Example

Point C is the midpoint of segment AB.

Find AC, CB, and AB.
Solution
AC = CB Definition of midpoint
8x – 6 = 7x + 3 Substitute.
x–6=3 Subtract 7x from both sides.
x=9

Finding the Midpoint
Example

Point C is the midpoint of segment AB.

Find AC, CB, and AB.
Solution
Use the value of x to find AC and CB, which should
be the same.
AC = 8x − 6 CB = 7 x + 3
AC = 8(9) − 6 CB = 7(9) + 3
AC = 72 − 6 CB = 63 + 3
AC = 66 CB = 66

Finding the Midpoint
Example

Point C is the midpoint of segment AB.

Find AC, CB, and AB.
Solution
To find AB, we add.
AB = AC + CB Use the Segment Addition Postulate.
= 66 + 66 Substitute.
= 132 Add.
