Thyroid: Heal Thyself by Dr. Aaron Ernst
Thyroid: Heal Thyself by Dr. Aaron Ernst
Are you tired and gaining weight, no matter what you eat or how time you spend at the gym? Is your
hair thinning or falling out in chunks when you shower or brush your hair? Do you feel like you are in
a mental fog? Are you cold all the time? You may have an undiagnosed thyroid problem! Even if your
MD says your thyroid Is normal remember - they don’t look at your thyroid at all on blood test (TSH is
a brain hormone, not a thyroid hormone!) If you are already on thyroid hormone medication, your
continuing low-thyroid symptoms mean that there is an UNDERLYING CAUSE that needs to be
addressed with Functional Medicine tools and expertise. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
• Lack of energy
• Weight gain
• Feeling cold
• Irritability
• Brain fog
• Insatiable appetite
• Thinning hair
• Racing heartbeat or palpitations
• Depression
• Fluid retention
• Bloating
• Dry skin
• Very light or very heavy menstrual flow
• Joint aches and pains
• Constipation
T3 hormone is the metabolically active version of thyroid hormone. T4 must be converted into T3,
which binds to special thyroid receptors in our cells. When T4 isn’t properly converting to T3, stress is
almost always the main cause. But remember, the body makes no distinction between types of stress.
Be it physical, emotional, or mental, the physiological reaction to stress is the same. Chronic stress not
only impacts the complex relationship between the glands of the endocrine system, but it can also
trigger production of reverse T3 (rT3). rT3 is not usable in the same way that T3 is, and can actually
block normal T3 hormone from binding to the cell membranes. This is a survival mode response in the
body, designed to conserve energy. The problem comes when stress is chronic, leading to this survival
mechanism constantly being triggered. The body will continually interfere with its own production and
use of T3 hormone.
The second leading cause of thyroid dysfunction is an inability of the thyroid receptors in the cell
membranes to bind to T3. In this case, the body can convert T4 to T3, but the receptors are unable to
make use of it. This can occur due to rT3 in the bloodstream, as previously described, inflammation of
the cell membranes, or toxins in the system (primarily heavy metals and pesticides/herbicides). Toxins
can blunt thyroid receptors, rendering them unable to function properly. Certain halogenated
compounds (called trihalomethanes) like bromine, chlorine and fluorine are notorious for binding to
these cell receptors and disrupting intake of T3. Mercury, aluminum and lead are also known thyroid
hormone inhibitors. The worst toxin for the thyroid, and your entire body for that matter, is Glyphosate
(RoundUP) which isn’t just sprayed on the weeds in
your yard/driveway. It’s used on nearly all grains in
the US (corn/wheat and soy). Studies have shown a
marked decrease of thyroid function from long term
exposure to these compounds.

Note that both of these causes are nearly impossible to detect with the usual thyroid function panel,
which simply tests for TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) in the blood. Prescription medications will
drive down TSH and raise T4 levels, yielding test results that look normal, while you still feel unwell.
Of note also is that levothyroxine, the standard drug used to treat thyroid disease, is a synthetic version
of T4. If your body cannot convert it, or if stress is causing the conversion to shut down another path
(rT3), then the meds will be ineffective.
The third leading cause of thyroid disease is an autoimmune disorder, leading to Hashimoto’s disease.
Autoimmunity is when your own body’s immune system is attacking specific cells or tissues in the
body. Science names these diseases based upon what your immune system is attacking. Hashimoto’s
disease is the thyroid being attacked by the body’s own immune system and is far and away the
leading cause of thyroid conditions today (as many as 90% of people taking thyroid prescription
medications have Hashimoto’s thyroid but are unaware because their MDs don’t run the right tests to
isolate the cause). The insidiousness of autoimmunity is that it can exist for years in the body before it
shows up on a blood test (and that only if you are lucky enough to see a specialist endocrinologist
who is familiar with the pandemic of autoimmune thyroid!) It’s common to the point of epidemic levels,
but often goes undetected until it finally manifests as a chronic disease like Hashimoto’s.
I know what you’re thinking, Dr. Ernst, I had my thyroid tested and my doctor said I am fine (or I am
medicating it properly and I am fine). Well…. this can’t be further from the truth. Remember, TSH
(the gold standard test for thyroid function ISN’T a thyroid test, rather it’s an upstream hormone from
the brain (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) which indirectly tells a physician about your thyroid function.
There are DIRECT tests available which will not only tell you how well your thyroid is functioning but
also what the underlying cause is if underactive or pre-diagnosed.aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Below is an example of a “Real Thyroid Panel” that we run on our patients (regardless of their thyroid
status -remember you can’t feel thyroid function and the only way to know if yours is working perfectly
is to have a blood test”
Note that this test not only includes TSH but 10 other vitally important factors of thyroid function –
including Vitamin D3 levels! In this example this person has a 100% medically and functionally healthy
thyroid.
Can you now see why your MD testing your TSH is missing 99% of the information needed to
determine your thyroid function and underlying causes!
In 15 years of clinical practice and working with thousands of thyroid patients I continue to get shocked
when I hear “Dr. Ernst, I have never had toxic metals tested” – but then again, it’s to be expected.
MDs do not seek CAUSE, rather they seek medicated correction and even if they tested you for heavy
metals, they would do the wrong test. MDs test heavy metals in your blood. If you had heavy metals
in your blood, it’s a life-threatening condition that requires immediate attention and IV chelation.
Your body is quite smart! Your innate intelligence/immunity knows the metals are toxic, so it does
everything within its power to remove them from your blood (which is why your blood test for metals
is almost always negative and you are falsely told you don’t have heavy metals) and put them into your
organs of detoxification, fat cells and tissues – including your hair! Therefore, a heavy metals hair test
is the best, and least invasive, way to see if you are heavy metal toxic.aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Heavy Metals In The RED ALERT ZONE (Highly toxic) – Arsenic & Uranium
(Yes Arsenic poisoning is still happening today, it’s not something specific only to the late 1800,
early 1900s anymore!)
Heavy Metals In the CAUTION ZONE (Toxic) – Aluminum, Antimony, Lead, Silver)
(These are known endocrine disrupters – ie Thryoid Disease)
Heavy Metals in the WATCH OUT ZONE (High Normal) – Barium, Cadmium, Mercury, Nickel, Tin,
Titanium)
Can you see why this is absolutely essential for you to know – not just for your Thyroid Health but for
your overall health (Especially knowing your Aluminum, Mercury and Lead levels – as they are neuro
and cardio toxic – brain and heart toxins!aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Note how this 40-year-old female thyroid patient is deficient in zinc and selenium! And her MD never
tested her for anything other than TSH and instantly medicated her – for over 20 years!
You may find this mind blowing, but your brain also physically tells your thyroid how much T4/T3
hormone to make via your nerve system.aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
A quick anatomy lesson – organs are not voluntarily controlled – i.e. you can’t make your thyroid
secrete more T4 just by thinking it! They are autonomically controlled (i.e. automatically) through a
system called your Autonomic Nerve System (ANS). This branch of your nerve system has two
components:
1. Parasympathetic – The signals from your brain to automatically slow things down.
2. Sympathetic – The signals from your brain to automatically speed things up.
The parasympathetic control of your thyroid comes through a nerve called “The Vagus Nerve” which
is a cranial nerve that exits just behind the back of your skull/neck and travels down the
esophagus/throat to your thyroid (and every other organ in your body). Again, the Vagus nerve when
working properly slows the production of
thyroid hormone to make sure you’re not
producing too much.aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Interreference of the CERVICAL NERVE 7/8 results in an underproduction of thyroid hormone – i.e.
HYPOTHYROID DISEASE
As hypothyroid disease is the most common form experienced by Americans, you can see the most
common nerve inflammation/damage is within the cervical nerve 7/8 sympathetic system.
NOTE: The majority of cases do not have any neck pain, as you might think damage to a cervical/neck
nerve would result in pain. Nerves carry pain signals, so if the nerve is inflamed/damaged its ability to
transmit pain is DIMINISHED – i.e. you can’t feel it!aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Testing the nerve system is quite simple – yet nearly 100% of MDs do not have the necessary
equipment or skill to interpret the results. Yes, your MD can take an x-ray of your neck to look for
C7/8 disc/nerve damage but they won’t notate it in the report unless there is physical fracture or
dislocation of the spine/spinal discs – and if that’s the case they will immediately refer you to an
orthopedist for a surgical consult or physical therapist for therapy – and once again miss the connection
of your nerve system and thyroid health!
Has her MD run this test – NOPE! What does this tell me? Her hypothyroid is not only a HEAVY
METAL PROBLEM (see section on heavy metals and thyroid disease) but also a NEUROLOGICAL
PROBLEM!
Do we stop with just this test? NO! A Structural X-Ray will reveal what is causing the abnormal
thermography. X-rays are another simple, slightly invasive (x-rays are ionizing radiation but todays
digital systems allow the dose to be microscopic to what it was when I first began practice 15 years
ago!)
This is evidence of neurological dysfunction (subluxation) as another cause behind her hypothyroid
condition. She has both vagal nerve and cervical 7/8 nerve damage! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
When asked about pain in her neck she said, “Well not a lot, you know here or there when I sleep
wrong, or I’m stressed b/c of work.” You would look at her x-ray and think she would be paralyzed –
yet she’s fully mobile – just suffering from all the symptoms of hypothyroid.
Has her MD done a functional autonomic nerve system test to determine why her thyroid isn’t
producing enough T4 causing an elevation in her TSH? NO!
By the way, I am trained in a unique structural/functional spinal therapy known as Chiropractic Bio-
Physics and Pettibon Technique which can fix this nerve irritation. Look at the results (below) of just
one therapy we did!aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Now that you know how to test for the underlying causes of thyroid disease, let’s move on to some
things you can do right now to improve your thyroid function while you wait for your exam results to
come back and be analyzed.
First, you’ll remove the toxins, then start a natural detox diet cleanse, and finally address the hormone
dysregulation.
Before embarking on a detox plan, you want to make sure you’ve removed the source of toxicity. You
cannot heal until you’ve removed the source! Watch out for environmental toxins that target thyroid
hormone receptors in particular or can negatively impact the body’s ability to use iodine, a necessary
element for thyroid health.
• Glyphosate (RoundUp)
• Heavy Metals (mercury, aluminum, thallium, lead etc)
• Halides: Chlorine, Bromine, Fluorine
• Silver Amalgam Fillings (mercury toxicity)
These toxins easily bind to thyroid receptors in the cell membranes, interfering with proper thyroid
function. Steer clear of them! Some things that you can do to reduce your exposure include:
• Consume only organic fruits and vegetables and eliminate grains (corn, wheat, rice & oats)
as they are the most heavily sprayed foods today). This also includes foods that contain or
are made from grains (beer, many snacks, and many health foods!)
• Consider a house or shower filter to remove chlorine and fluoride from the water that you
shower in. Studies show that steam inhalation causes the highest exposure to chlorine (in
the form of trihalomethanes) than any other typical exposure and you inhale water vapor
when showering!
• Limit or eliminate hot tub and pool use that is chlorinated/brominated. Both can have high
levels of bromine and chlorine.
• Avoid brominated flour and brominated beverages (usually citrus flavored sodas are the
biggest culprits – Mountain Dew, Fresca, SunDrop etc). Many processed foods also contain
bromine, ALWAYS check the ingredient labels before you buy.
Step 2: Start a Natural Detox Diet Cleanse
Addressing your diet will have a profound impact on your body’s ability to get rid of the built up toxins
that are currently interfering with your thyroid health. The main tenets of a natural detox cleanse
include:
• Removing refined sugars and high glycemic foods
• Removing any foods triggering an allergic reaction (especially gluten, dairy, corn, eggs,
and soy).asdfffhhhhh nbnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Antioxidants are compounds that inhibit oxidation, a chemical reaction that can produce free radicals
and trigger a chain reaction that may damage cells in the body. Consuming antioxidant rich foods
provides your body with the nutrients necessary to carry out cellular rebuilding and protection against
damage.
You can find more information about natural detoxification and even thousands of recipes that support
this type of diet at www.AskDrErnst.com
Two key nutrients that are often deficient when thyroid disorder is present are selenium, and vitamin
D3. Both are available as supplements and can be taken to promote the body’s innate ability to
detoxify.
While iodine is an essential nutrient needed for thyroid hormone formation (if you didn’t know the 3
or 4 you see on T3/T4 is simply a designation for the number of iodine’s are attached to the thyroid
hormone protein) supplementing with iodine can harm your thyroid is you are an undiagnosed
Hashimoto’s patient.
NEVER USE IODINE if you are autoimmune thyroid as it can make your condition worse by stimulating
hormone production (which sounds good) but remember, an autoimmune thyroid is being attacked
by antibodies, so increasing production also increases the attack, thus worsening the condition.
What makes Iodine supplementation even more concerning is that 90% of people medicating their
thyroid have undiagnosed autoimmune thyroid!
Examining symptoms alone rarely gives the whole picture regarding hormone imbalances. To
effectively fix hormone dysregulation, it is imperative to get your hormones properly tested. Many
doctors only test thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which fails to give a full understanding of thyroid
health. Moreover, most doctors interpret these already incomplete labs improperly, only considering
results over 5 or now even as high as 10 worth treating.
Did you know that the latest guidelines of the American College of Endocrinology consider anyone
with a TSH over 3.0 as hypothyroid!
Apart from TSH, other essential test required to measure thyroid health include:
• Free T3
• T3 Uptake
• Free Thyroxine Index
• Free T4
• Reverse T3
• Thyroid antibodies (TPOab and TGab)aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
