The presentation contains the Pre-colonial vernacular architecture and its
features. It includes the climate, history, construction, materials, walls, opening,
roofs, eaves, and vernacular models. These models are bahay kubo and bahay na
bato. It tackles the architectural features of both vernacular models as well as
differentiating their characteristics. It also discusses how the way of living is
incorporated into both models in terms of climate, topography, and cultural aspect.
The succeeding slides cover the pre-spanish architecture of different enthic groups.
The pre-spanish architecture of Luzon covers the features of vernacular architecture
such as location, plans, structural, and decorative elements of:
1. Bontoc house of Cordillera Mountain
a. Bontoc - house within a house, square floor plan, its four corner post,
and sleeping compartment.
2. Ifugao house of Cordillera Mountains
a. Ifugao - built on rice terraces, enclosed structure which is square in
plan, floor girders, and ambubulan figure form.
3. Isneg of Apayao Mountain and Northern part of Cordillera
a. Isneg - home of the Isneg boat people, and a single-room rectangular
structure.
b. Ivatan - built along the sides and tops of rocky hills, and walls made of
lime and stone.
4. Kalinga house of Cordillera Mountain
a. Kalinga - rectangular or octagonal form, and 12 posts used as
supports.
5. Mangyan house of Mindoro Mountain
a. Mangyan - communal house, and walls are made of the bark of trees
b. Tagbanua - usually made of eight levels, and the entire house do not
have windows.

a. Badjao - house boats
7. Manobo House of Mindanao
a. Manobo - flooring is made of withered bark of the mahogany tree, and
four or more corner posts are used as main supports to the house.
b. Maranao Torogan - an ancestral house, torogan house is constructed
by first putting up the center post, and walls are made of gisuk wooden
panels
