MMW Reflection Paper

1. Mathematics plays a key role in many aspects of life, including politics and economics. It is used in election statistics and modeling economic activity. 2. The document discusses why the author loves mathematics, such as its real-world applications, but also dislikes its abstract nature which makes problems difficult. 3. The greatest contribution of mathematics to humanity has been in economics, through statistical data and precise models that help economists understand and predict economic cycles.

1. What is the role of Mathematics in your course?

Also, what is it in Mathematics that you love

and hate?

Mathematics is deeper and more than just a program that introduces analytical and systematical
solutions and calculations to come up with exact measurements and estimations of things such as
figures, structures, images, etc. in the practical and realistic realm; Mathematics definitely not evolving
in theories. It is intensely involved in different aspects of life, as well as in Politics.

In Politics, Mathematics is one of its associates or colleagues in social engineering, defining, and
elaborating to the people in society how the system and results work. As an example, aside from it is
being unequivocally and ineluctably involved in our economy. Mathematics is dominantly used before
elections, the statistics office evaluates or assesses the possible number of votes for each political
candidate; this introduces the possible or partial winners of the election. And during elections, the
accounting of the casted votes is needed to get the official results. In short, mathematics is inextricably
linked with politics.

The ground that makes me love Mathematics is how it is being applied and related to real-life
situations on a daily basis. Furthermore, I like Mathematics in the way how it introduces the objectivity
of equations that leads to answers that are accurate. I honestly don’t like it for some reasons, such as it
is hard for me to understand its nature, which made it hard to solve mathematical problems.

2. What to you is the greatest contribution of Mathematics in humankind?

In my perspective, the greatest contribution of Mathematics to humankind is how it is intensely

involved with the economic cycle, the economic capacity and status are one of the main necessities of
people in a society.

“Mathematics permits economists to construct precisely defined models from which exact
conclusions can be derived with mathematical logic, which can then be tested using statistical data and
used to make quantifiable predictions about future economic activity.” A statement from a researcher.
From the statement, the use of statistical data was mentioned. Statistical data, helps economists to
accurately have information and details on things that are related to our economy. With the data
gathered through statistics, it will be easier for economists to track or trace possible conflicts and
fluctuations.
3. What is your ambition? What is the reason why you will continue pursuing this college
degree despite the hardship in the academe brought by this pandemic?

Having an ambition is like having an abundance of fervor and a piece of petrified state while being
at the process or starting point of achieving it. Despite the daunting and intimidating feeling that my
ambition introduces to me, I have instilled in myself that I have to remain adamant and committed to
what I really want, whom I want to be in life.

The college course that I am currently taking is relatively connected with my desired profession in
the future. My ambition in life is to be successful in my chosen field of career, I am seeing myself as a
woman in the legal field. I want to be a lawyer.

For someone like me who was not born with many privileges, it is going to be a roller coaster ride
for me and for my family as well to live in my towering goal for my later years. However, I have my
unwavering hunger and thirst to progress and attain achievements in life. In spite of how financially
droughting for my parents, and how draining it is to be a student while trying to meet the
standards/requirements of the university. My parents supported me wholeheartedly from the very
start to still pursue and admit me to college to have the degree.

Except for the reason that I have the ambition to be in the legal field, I did pursue this college
degree because it had become a frustration for my late grandparents. And I also want to prove and
attain something great for them. Even though this process is a bit rocky, I will still choose to go through
it because I want it.

4. Show mathematically that among triangle, square and hexagon, the maximum efficiency in
building honeycombs is if it follows a hexagonal shape, i.e. assuming the same perimeters,
the hexagon has the biggest total area, as the ratio of the total areas will be approximately
0.048, 0.063 and 0.072, respectively.

5. Kindly discuss briefly what you have significantly learned in this lesson. You may also ask a
question about this topic.
