The learner demonstrates understanding of the basic concepts of trigonometry.

Key Concepts /
Understandings to be Trigonometry is one of the most important branches in mathematics that finds huge
Developed application in diverse fields. The branch called “Trigonometry” basically deals with the
study of the relationship between the sides and angles of the right-angle triangle.

The trigonometric ratios of a triangle are also called the trigonometric functions. Sine,
cosine, tangent, cosecant, secant and cotangent are the six trigonometric functions and
are abbreviated as sin, cos, tan, csc, sec, and cot. The six important trigonometric
functions (trigonometric ratios) are calculated using this mnemonic (SOH CAH TOA and
CHO SHA CAO) in order to solve easily.

4.1 Introductory Activity

Drill: Recall the parts of a right triangle

5 minutes
4.2 Activity Activity : Know my Ratio !

1. The students will group themselves into five and they will be provided with a right
triangle.
2. Each member of the group will identify the opposite side, the adjacent side of the
acute angle ϴ and the hypotenuse of the right triangle. They will also write the
ratio as instructed.
3. A table will be posted on the board for each group to fill in their answers.

1. Did you enjoy the acitivity? Why? Why not?

2. What have you learned from the activity?
3. How will you know the opposite side of an acute angle?
4. How will you know the adjacent side of an acute angle ?
5. How do you call the ratio of the opposite side and the hypotenuse? Adjacent
and the hypotenuse? Opposite and adjacent?

4.4 Reflect:

Abstraction Define the six trigonometric ratios of an acute angle ϴ in a right triangle.
In a right triangle, there are six possible trigonometric ratios as follows:
minutes

Example in solving trigonometric function:

Calculate the value of sin θ in the following triangle.

Solution:

For easier recall, use the mnemonic: SOH CAH TOA & CHO
SHA CAO to remember the formula for trigonometry ratios.
4.5 Group Activity:

Application
minutes 1. The class will be divided into small groups. Each group must choose their
respective leader.
5 2. They will be provided with sample problems to measure their understanding.
3. The following real life situations are related to trigonometric ratios that was
tackled in the previous discussion.

1. You are six feet tall and measure the angle between the horizontal and a bird in
the sky to be 40∘. You can see that the shadow of the bird is directly beneath the
bird, and 200 feet away from you on the ground. How high is the bird in the sky?

2. While out swimming one day you spot a coin at the bottom of the pool. The
pool is ten feet deep, and the angle between the top of the water and the coin is
15∘. How far away is the coin from you along the bottom of the pool?
