Work Instruction: Safe Use of Ladders

Purpose: This work instruction aims to provide guidelines for the safe use of ladders in order to prevent
accidents and injuries.

Scope: This work instruction applies to all employees and contractors who use ladders in their work
activities.

Responsibilities:

Employees and contractors are responsible for following the guidelines in this work instruction and for
reporting any issues or concerns related to the use of ladders to their supervisor or manager.

Supervisors and managers are responsible for ensuring that employees and contractors are trained on
the safe use of ladders and for monitoring compliance with this work instruction.

Instructions:

Choose the right ladder for the job. Ladders should be long enough to reach the intended height without
overreaching, and sturdy enough to support the weight of the user and any equipment or materials they
are carrying. Check the weight capacity and the condition of the ladder before each use.

Inspect the ladder before each use. Check for any cracks, loose or missing parts, or other damage. Do not
use a damaged ladder. Report any damage to the ladder to your supervisor or manager.

Set up the ladder on a stable and level surface. Make sure the ladder is secure and will not wobble or tip
over. Do not place the ladder on an uneven surface or on top of other objects to increase its height.

Use the ladder safely. Always face the ladder and keep both hands on the ladder while climbing up or
down. Do not carry any objects or tools in your hands while climbing the ladder. Use a tool belt or hoist
to bring up any equipment or materials.

Do not overreach. Keep your body centered on the ladder and do not lean to one side or overreach for
objects. If you cannot reach an object, climb down the ladder and reposition it closer to the object.
Do not climb on the top two rungs of the ladder. The top two rungs should not be used for standing or as
a step. If you need to reach a higher point, use a taller ladder.

Do not exceed the weight capacity of the ladder. Check the weight capacity of the ladder before use and
do not exceed it. Do not use the ladder if you are carrying heavy equipment or materials that exceed the
weight capacity.

Do not use the ladder in adverse weather conditions. Do not use the ladder in rainy, snowy or windy
conditions. If you are unsure about the safety of using the ladder, consult your supervisor or manager.

Climb down the ladder carefully. Do not jump or slide down the ladder. Descend the ladder slowly, facing
the ladder and keeping both hands on the ladder until you reach the ground.

Store the ladder properly. Store the ladder in a dry and secure location, away from heat and moisture.
Do not stack other materials or equipment on top of the ladder.

Conclusion: Following these guidelines for the safe use of ladders can help prevent accidents and
injuries. If you have any questions or concerns about using a ladder, consult your supervisor or manager.
