Module 2 STS PDF

The document discusses a lesson on the implications of a world without science and technology, with the author drawing a picture and explaining that life would be much more difficult. It then asks students to research Filipino scientists and their contributions to science, providing examples of several scientists and their achievements in fields like marine biology, nuclear medicine, agriculture, and food technology. Students are also asked to discuss in groups how science and technology have impacted local and regional development in the Philippines.

Module #2

CHAPTER 1, LESSON 2

Name: Roland T. Abela II

Instructor: Sir Bernie C. Palacio, LPT
Course: BSCE-2B
Pre-Activity: Draw what you think society or the world would be without science and
technology. In one paragraph, present your reasons for your drawing.

We currently live in a straightforward and tranquil setting, which is the first

thing that springs to mind. The benefits and drawbacks of a world without science and
technology are both there. The drawbacks of this are that there are no advancement and
people are left to fend for themselves in the absence of technology. Since we have
modern technology, life would be considerably more challenging without it. Furthermore,
without science there will be no knowledge generation because science is a sort of
knowledge. People simply awaken in search of food to subsist. This has the benefit that
no new discoveries or innovations will compromise the environment. We weren't
seriously ill or hurt as a result of the weather or environment. The environment is free of
plastic, and the water and air are also clean. Since many products in today's world are put
through animal testing for safety in order to meet regulatory standards for identifying
potential hazards to humans, animals, and the environment, animals are no longer hurt for
selfish motives. For liability considerations, even unregulated products like cosmetics are
frequently submitted to animal testing. I think that everything in the world existed before
science and technology were discovered.

Analysis: What is the implication of your drawing and explanation to the modern
development of science?

My drawing portrays that if science and technology weren’t present today, it will
be hard for us because we didn’t have enough tools or knowledge to improve our daily
lives. We would still be using spears or talking in some unknown languages. But due to
the discovery and the steady improvement of science and technology, we are able to
improve and slowly cultivate the world. But there are also backlashes of these
improvements such as increase in pollution around the world.

Activity: Identify several Filipino scientists. Research on their contributions in the field
of science and examine what made them pursue a career in science and present your work
in class.

• Angel Alcala (Marine Biodiversity)

Angel Alcala is a Filipino Biologist who was recognized for his contributions to
building sanctuaries and to promote biodiversity in the aquatic ecosystems in the
Philippines. His biological contributions to the environment, his passion for
marine life especially those in the tropical waters of his country’s ecosystems
have made him a renowned hero for natural sciences in the Philippines. He spent
over 30 years studying marine biology, conservation biology, terrestrial ecology
and is behind the invention of artificial coral reefs for fisheries in Southeast Asia.
He is one of the First Filipinos Inducted into Fulbright Hall of Fame.

• Paulo C. Campos (Nuclear Medicine)

Paulo Campos is a Filipino Physician and educator who is known for his
promotion of wider community health care and his achievements in the field of
nuclear medicine for which he was named as The Father of Nuclear Medicine in
the Philippines.

• Ramon C. Barba (Flower Induction)

Ramon Barba is a Filipino inventor and Horticulturist, thanks to his invention,

mango trees, and other crops now can produce more flowers using ethrel and
potassium nitrate. This invention changed how mangoes and other fruits or crops
are grown globally.

• Rodolfo C. Aquino (Isolated Rice Breeds)

In 1966, Dr. Rodolfo Aquino isolated nine specific breeds of rice for the
International Rice Research Institute. His discoveries helped prevent famine in
much of Asia, and were nearly solely responsible for Thailand and Vietnam
becoming the world’s leading rice producers (A spot once solely occupied by the
Philippines.)

• Julian Banzon (Alternative Fuel)

Julián Arca Banzon was a Filipino biochemist and a National Scientist of the
Philippines. Banzon is credited for his research in alternative fuel. He researched
the production of ethyl ester fuels from sugarcane and coconuts and devised a
method of extracting residual coconut oil through chemical means.

• Gregorio Y. Zara (Inventor of the Videophone)

Gregorio Zara was a famous Engineer and Physicist in the Philippines who
invented and patented the first Videophone device (‘Photo Phone Signal Separator
Network) in 1955. He also discovered the physical law of Electrical Kinetic
Resistance called the Zara effect in 1930.

• Fe del Mundo (Bamboo Incubator Inventor)

Dr. Fe Del Mundo (Pediatrician) – credited with studies that lead to the invention
of an improved incubator and a device to treat jaundice. Fe del Mundo’s invention
has saved countless premature infants around the world. She is known as the
Inventor of Bamboo Incubator. Dedicated her life to the cause of pediatrics in the
Philippines.

• Edgardo Gomez (Marine Biologist)

Edgardo Dizon Gomez, ONS was a Filipino biologist who has conferred the rank
of National Scientist of the Philippines in 2014. He was a professor emeritus for
marine biology at the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute.
Gomez saw the need to protect the Philippine archipelago’s vast marine resources
in particular that of coral reefs. He led the world’s first national-scale assessment
of damage to coral reefs leading to international conservation initiatives such as
the replanting of corals. He also pioneered giant clam breeding stationed in
Bolinao and other protected areas for coastal communities in the Philippines.
• Alexis Belonio (Low-cost Rice husk)

Alexis T. Belonio is a professor, engineer, scientist, innovator, and inventor from

the Philippines. He was the first Filipino to receive the Rolex Award for
Enterprise in 2008 for his invention of a low-cost and environment-friendly rice
husk stove.

• María Orosa (Food Technology)

María Orosa Ylagan was a Filipina food technologist, pharmaceutical chemist,

humanitarian, and war heroine. She experimented with foods native to the
Philippines, and during World War II developed Soyalac (a nutrient-rich drink
from soybeans) and Darak (rice cookies packed with vitamin B-1, which could
also prevent beriberi disease), which she also helped smuggle into Japanese-run
internment camps which helped save the lives of thousands of Filipinos,
Americans, and other nationals. She introduced to the public the well-known
banana ketchup.
