Chapter III - All Is Well

This study will evaluate the growth performance of pechay (Brassica rapa L.) planted in different media (hydroponics, soil, and coconut husk). Researchers will measure plant height, number of leaves, and root length over 14 days. The experimental method will be used, with 10 seedlings planted in each media. Materials like seedlings, soil, coconut husk, and bottles for hydroponics will be prepared. Measurements will be taken every 3 days and compared using one-way ANOVA analysis to determine if there are statistically significant differences in growth between the media types.

Chapter III

Methodology

Brassica Rapa subsp. chinensis or also known as Pechay in the Philippines, will

be used as a variable in this study, to identify its growth performance in different media:

Hydroponics, Soil, and Coconut Husk. The researchers will prepare and set-up these

different media and identify its growth performance based on its height, number of

leaves, and root length.

Research Design

The experimental method of research will be used in this study to test the growth

performance of pechay (Brassica rapa L.) in different media. This study will be

conducted to evaluate the growth and yield performance of pechay in different media

applied: hydroponic, pure soil and coconut husk, and determine its growth in terms

of plant height, number of leaves, and root length. According to Harland (n.d),

experimental research includes a hypothesis, a variable that can be manipulated by

the researcher, and variables that can be measured, calculated and compared. It is

a study that strictly adheres to a scientific research design. Furthermore, it allows the

researchers to collect data, and the results will either support or reject the

hypothesis.

Experimental Procedure

Preparation of materials

For the preparation of materials to be used in this study, the researchers will

buy 1 pack of Pechay seedlings, 20 pcs of seedling bag from A & H Farm supply. As

for the soil and coconut husk, it is available at Beltran’s residence. For the set-up of

Hydroponics the materials to be needed are 10 plastic bottles, and a 10 pieces of 12

inches twine. The researchers will be planting 10 seedlings in each media. The

researchers will prepare the different media and plant the seeds of pechay with the

use of the gardening tools at Beltran’s garden. Each of the researchers will have a

contribution of 100 pesos to buy all the materials needed, and for other expenses.

The researchers will make use of these materials for their study to be possible.

Set-up of Hydroponics

The procedure in

preparing the Hydroponic according to Wikihow.com (October 28, 2021) cut the top

with a measurement of 4 in (10 cm) off of a plastic bottle or cut the center of the plastic

bottle horizontally or half. Poke a hole through the bottle cap using a screwdriver (the

heated end of the screwdriver over a candle flame) or you can use a nail. Feed a piece

of twine through the hole in the cap so it is 30 cm long until you have 15 cm on each

side. Fill the bottom or the base of the bottle with water. Place the top of the bottle

upside-down so the twine is mostly submerged. Put growing medium such as perlite or

vermiculite where water can easily travel to and place the seeds into the top of the

bottle.

Soil preparation

The procedure in preparing the Soil is first what you’re going to do is find a spot,

clear out rocks and debris, dig up the grass then loosen the soil into pieces. Don’t put

immediately the soil, make a hole at the bottom of the pot for drainage, put perlite at

the bottom to help water flow then after scoop the soil and place it unto the pot.

Preparation of Coconut Husk

The procedure in preparing the Coconut husk clean the coconut husk of the

outer skin, kept it in water in order to reduce the stiffness of the raw coconut husk, and

then the wet coconut husk is the filled in a small pot or seedling bag, and the pechay

seed is sown on the coconut husk, spray water to seed.

Data Gathering Procedure / Data Analysis

In gathering the data of the growth performance of Pechay in different media,

after every 3 days, the researchers will measure the plant height with the use of tape

measure in units of cm, and count the number of leaves. On the 14 th day, the

researchers will measure the root length with the use also of tape measure in units of

cm. The results of these measurements will be compared and analyze with the use of

one-way ANOVA test.

Research Instrument

The researchers utilized one way analysis of Varience (ANOVA) methodological

method to analyze the data obtained. The significant difference between the quality of

the grown pechays are evaluated by a statistical method of making simultaneous

comparisons. It is a method for determining whether the findings of the experiment

have a significant relationship. It allows researchers to work out whether the null

hypothesis should be rejected or if the alternative hypothesis should be accepted.

A one-way ANOVA evaluates the impact of a sole factor on a sole response

variable. It determines whether all the samples are the same. The one-way ANOVA is

used to determine whether there are any statistically significant differences between

the means of three or more independent (unrelated) groups. (Kenton, W. 2021)
