Imagine what it was like in 1973, when the first cell phone was
invented. Back then it was a novelty and a luxury to have a futuristic
technological device that could keep you connected to the rest of the
world 24 hours a day. In that time, one would never believe that in just a
few decades, the world would be overrun by technological devices such
as cell phones. Today, technology is an integral, commonplace part of
everyone’s lives, however technology doesn’t just include cell phones, it
encompasses computers, the internet, videogames, television, movies,
and practically anything with a screen. Many people can’t live without
these forms of technology, and many people praise their ability to make
our lives easier. However, they are doing more harm than good, especially
on youth. Technology is negatively affecting America’s youth because it
is destroying social skills and causing a dependency on constant
stimulation.

People will always argue that technology offers so many benefits in

their day to day lives. However, it is clear that it is more detrimental than
most people realize. Technology is destroying children’s social skills and
causing a dependency on constant stimulation. Think about the future of
America’s children. What good is having a smart phone with endless
knowledge at their fingertips when they can’t get a job due to an inability
to keep up casual conversation in an interview? What favors are parents
doing for their children by shoving a television in front of them the second
they get a little bored instead of interacting with them and helping them
develop valuable skills? The answer to both questions is nothing. It does no
good and no favors to overuse technology in the way that Americans are
currently overusing it.

Oro City. 2020. p.5

The Importance of Being Persuasive

By Marikit Tara Alto Uychoco

The world we live in is filled with people, products, and movements

that aim to persuade individuals and groups toward their own ends. This
is seen in television commercials, political speeches, election
campaigns, homilies in church. This is done even in the institutions that
are closest to us, such as the school and the family.
Everywhere, everyone wants us to do something, whether it is to
follow the Ten Commandments, to buy the latest gadget, or to go
against an ideology. The truth is, many of the arguments and positions
that we are given can be unreasonable, deceitful, or just plain wrong.
Sometimes, we can have the uneasy feeling that we are being forced
into believing or doing something that isn’t right, and many times that
feeling would be proven to be true. It is important to be able to fully
articulate the problems and concerns one may have when it comes to
grappling with several positions to discover their societal and political
significance and to be able to use this skill in every instance of our lives.
According to “Walter Lipman”, we need to hear the opinion of others
since “freedom of discussion improves our own opinions”
(Malaya and Uychoco 1999:8)
You are at the point in your life where your parents can no longer
shelter you from the evils of this world, and the best weapon you have in
this competitive and chaotic society is your mind. The ability to
appreciate and create sophisticated positions in this world is one that will
guide you in every endeavor, whether it is in choosing the right university,
profession, and later marriage partner.

Purposes, pages 101-102.

Component 6: Local Material

Ask the learner to read the story out loud. Then, answer the questions.

Giant Crocodile Breaks Size Record—Suspected in Fatal Attacks

Lolong beats previous record-holder by more than two feet.

Lolong has hit the big time—at 20.24 feet (6.17 meters) long,
the saltwater crocodile is officially the largest in captivity, the Guinness
World Records announced recently. Suspected of attacking several
people and killing two, the giant reptile was captured alive in
the Philippines' Bunawan township (map) last September.
The Guinness listing is based on data by experts including crocodile
zoologist Adam Britton, who measured the beast in his home, the new
Bunawan Eco-Park and Research Centre.
Initially wary of claims of record-breaking size, Britton blogged his
congratulations to Lolong "for amazing the skeptic in me."
"I didn't expect to ever see a crocodile greater than 20 feet long in
my lifetime, not an experience I will forget easily," wrote Britton, senior
partner of the Australia-based crocodilian research and consulting
group Big Gecko.
The previous captive record-holder was a 17.97-foot-long (5.48-
meter-long) Australian-caught saltwater crocodile.
What's more, Britton noted, the 2,370-pound (1,075-kilogram) Lolong
may have a sizable impact on crocodile conservation in the Philippines.
For instance, the Philippine Senate recently introduced a
resolution to strengthen laws protecting the saltwater crocodile and the
Philippine crocodile, a species deemed critically endangered by the
International Union for Conservation of Nature.
As Britton wrote on his blog, "this is excellent progress."
