STAGE 1 – THE INPUT STAGE

BACKGROUND OF THE COMPANY

‘Putu Mayam Malaysia’ began its business in 2001 and it has turned into a well-known
stall since its origin. Starting from a small outlet at night market, now the business has expanded
and grown up to 5 outlets around Kepala Batas, Penang. This business markets themselves as
one of the vendors selling local ‘kuih’ that everybody would love to attempt. Their signature
product, ‘Putu Mayam’ itself is notable for its tasty flavor, which requests to a great many
clients.

Reviewing how he got into this business, Mr Shahdan bin Ahmad said he is
exceptionally inspired by business yet didn't know which business to wander into. He used to
follow and assist his cousin in his business at the night market when he was still young, since
then he thought of starting his own business and put a lot of effort and time in researching for
the idea of his business until one day a thought of selling ‘Putu Mayam’ popped into his mind
and he challenged himself to start selling the food with the help from his wife, Puan Hayati.

‘Putu Mayam’ is essentially made with rice flour, water, salt, and a touch of oil. It is a
type of appam or known as pancake. The combination is blended into a batter and afterward
feed through the ‘idiyappam’ or ‘murukku press’ to expel out strands or vermicelli rice noodles
and afterward steamed. It is fundamentally similar to eating honey ‘bee hoon’ (rice noodles)
and it is found to be a healthy pancake that is loved by everyone from all ages starting with
children until the elders.

‘Putu Mayam Malaysia’ has developed to several brances in 2020 which are in Bertam,
Tasek Gelugor, Penaga, Juru and Teluk Kumbar in Penang.

The objective of the company review case is to decide the essential administration
approach through which Putu Mayam Malaysia works their business. Besides, we conduct a
company study on this eatery to represent the advantages of compelling administration

TOTAL 1.00 TOTAL 2.45

The Putu Mayam Malaysia’s strengths and weaknesses are represented using the IFE
Matrix. The total weighted score for affordable and value for money is 0.80, indicating that the
price is intended for everyone from every class starting from the bottom until to the top classes
since the price is very cheap and reasonable. The premium quality of the ingredient has the
second highest weighted score for strengths, which is 0.45. They serve ‘Putu Mayam’ with the
best quality in terms of the taste and portion of the food.

The overall weighted score for faithful customers and accessibility to the raw materials
are 0.05 and 0.10, respectively. Putu Mayam Malaysia has its own dedicated customers on the
grounds that the organization has been doing business for over 10 years. The business is able
to get enough supply for the raw material such as coconut with a reasonable price from the
supplier to be used for running the business.

Moreover, the total weighted score for recognition of availability to the customers is
0.10. The business is easily to be reached since they are operating every day except for Sunday
for all branches around Kepala Batas. For anyone that is craving to taste the warmth and fresh
‘Putu Mayam’, they can come to the branch nearby their neighborhood area to purchase the
food during the operating hours for the business.

The total weighted for weakness is 0.10, which is average for insufficient workers. Putu
Mayam Malaysia has an issue when they have a ton of clients during top hours and the
employees expect to double their work to keep the customers blissful. Food preparations can
consume a large chunk of the day on occasion. Having said that, they might encounter a few
consistency and quality control worries all through the branches. As a result, and all the more
essentially, to ensure that activities work without a hitch, they ought to connect more
experienced staff to deal with potential emergency circumstances, especially during top hours
and the weekend.

Aside from that, the overall weighted score for issues regarding to the operation
management and less exposure to bigger market and the business is easy to be copied is 0.05,
0.10 and 0.10, respectively. Putu Mayam Malaysia likewise has an issue where they do not get
enough business training in from the authorities in order for them to expand their business in
their future. Hence, the founder needs to put extra efforts in studying and gain more knowledge
on how to run the business well from paid business classes and from the tips of another sellers.
Unlike before, since the business does not get enough training, the workers take a long time to
prepare the orders from the customers and this has caused a long queue for the customers who
wait to get ‘Putu Mayam’ from the stall.

For the less exposure to the bigger market part, although Putu Mayam Malaysia has
been operating for more than 10 years already, however they are still getting less exposure to
the bigger market. So far, they are only getting exposure for the night markets around Kepala
Batas, thus it is crucial for them to go further and get exposure and getting known from other
areas in Penang. Entering the bigger market requires a lot of preparation and effort if one wants
to compete with well-known local sellers. Putu Mayam Malaysia would be impacted by this
limited market exposure since customers from other areas will find it challenging to get in
touch with them to fulfil their local ‘kuih’ needs.

Next is Putu Mayam Malaysia is a business that is easy to be copied. Putu Mayam
Malaysia continues to be relatively similar to its rivals in terms of food quality, target markets,
atmosphere and price even if it has made an effort to set itself apart from rivals by providing a
distinctive style of local ‘kuih’. Furthermore, the menu of Putu Mayam Malaysia is very simple
to duplicate. For instance, some sellers might sell instant ‘Putu Mayam’ since they are simple
to make. Last but not least, the total weighted score for lack of product variety is 0.10. For
example, the business only focus mainly on selling ‘Putu Mayam’ to the customers whereby
other sellers usually will have other options for their products such as selling other food as well
to attract the customers. As the result, the customers who come to Putu Mayam Malaysia’s
outlets will only get to purchase their main menu as the customers don’t have any other choices
to choose other food at the outlets. Thus, the overall score of the IFE Matrix is 2.45, indicating
that the firm is internally strong.

serving the public in formal and informal events such as gatherings, weddings and even Hari
Raya celebrations. From the result, the weightage for this opportunity is 0.05 and rated 1, giving
a weighted score of 0.05.

Finally, threats are addressed in Putu Mayam Malaysia. The business’ greatest threat is
increase in raw materials. These are because due to the unstable economy nowadays, the prices
for the materials such as brown sugar are increasing causing the business to face challenges in
looking for the supplier of the materials to be used in their product. The weight is 0.12 with a
rating of 4, resulting to the weighted score of 0.48. Other than that, there is also minor threat
for the business which is slow growth due to the ability to raise funds. For example, if the sales
drop for the day, the business will be facing problems in rolling for their capital to proceed
with the next sales for the next day. Hence, the person in charge regarding to the important
department must always be careful in managing the funds of the business in order to ensure
that the business is running smoothly. The weighted score is 0.08 with a rating of 1 giving
result of weighted score of 0.08.
