This document summarizes an article on diabetes mellitus (DM) in Ayurveda. It discusses DM prevalence rates in India and risk factors like urbanization and lifestyle changes. In Ayurveda, DM is considered a type of Prameha disorder caused by imbalance of the doshas. Prameha is classified based on etiology, symptoms, constitution and prognosis. Kapha Prameha results from high calorie diets and inactivity, while Pitta and Vata types have different causative factors. Ayurveda treatment focuses on avoiding triggers, correcting metabolism, diet, lifestyle modifications and various therapies.

Diabetes Mellitus in Ayurveda-

A Scientific Approach

Abstract:
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a dreadful lifestyle metabolic
disorder with an estimate of 8.7% of diabetic population
in India. The difference in number of cases being affected
in urban population with respect to rural is 8% because
of changes in lifestyle and consumption patterns. In
Ayurveda, DM can be interpreted under the broad clinical
entity described as Prameha. DM requires long-term
medical attention to limit the development of its devastating
complications. Treatment modalities in Ayurveda are
focused on avoidance of causative factors, correction
of metabolism at multi systemic level using various
drugs and therapies, diet management, modifications in
Dr. Seetha Chandran lifestyle etc. The disease which is manifested as a result
(BAMS, MD, Ph.D) of sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy food habits can be
eliminated by following the natural regimes advised

1. Introduction
Globally, an estimated 422 million adults are living with
diabetes, according to the latest 2016 data of World Health
Organization (WHO).[1] India has a diabetic population of
8.7%. (40.9 million diabetics in India expected to be 69.9
million by 2025).[2] The overall prevalence of diabetes
and prediabetes in all the 15 states of India were 7•3%
and 10.3% respectively. The prevalence of diabetes varied
from 4•3% in Bihar to 10•0% in Punjab and was higher in
urban areas (11•2%) than in rural areas (5•2%). States
with higher per-capita GDP seemed to have a higher
prevalence of diabetes (eg, Chandigarh had the highest
prevalence, 13.6%).[3] In India, the difference in number
