Electromagnetic Waves

This document discusses electromagnetic waves and their properties. It provides examples of different types of electromagnetic waves ordered from longest to shortest wavelength. It also gives examples of uses for different electromagnetic waves, such as X-rays being used in doctor's offices and microwaves being used for communication and cooking. The document poses questions about wavelengths, frequencies, and the speed of electromagnetic waves.

Electromagnetic Waves

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

3.1 state the properties of e.m. waves; For example, travels same speed, are transverse and
propagates in a vacuum.

3.2 differentiate between types of e.m. waves in terms of their wavelengths; Radio, infrared, visible,
ultraviolet, x-rays, Y-rays. Discuss the spectrum. Research project.

3.3 identify a source and use of each type of e.m. wave. Biology – Medical applications of
Y-rays and x- rays.
May /June 2016 P2 Q4

4. (a) List THREE types of electromagnetic waves in order of increasing wavelength.

Identify a use of EACH type of wave. (6 marks)

(b) Humans can ‘see’ electromagnetic radiation only between the wavelengths of about 4 × 10–7
m and 7 × 10–7 m. This is called the visible part of the spectrum.

A rattlesnake can detect e.m. radiation of frequency 3.5 × 1014 Hz and a honeybee can detect e.m.
radiation of 1 × 1015 Hz.

Calculate the wavelengths corresponding to EACH frequency. (5 marks)

(c) Thunder is heard 2.3 seconds after a flash of lightning is seen. If the lightening strike is 750 m
away, calculate the speed for this event. (4 marks)

[Speed of light, c = 3 × 108 ms–1]
