Assignment 2 HRE

This document provides details on 5 assignments related to heterogeneous reaction engineering. Assignment 1 asks to develop an overall rate expression for a liquid-solid reaction taking place on a flat surface. Assignment 2 asks to calculate the catalyst mass needed for 90% conversion of a reactant in a packed bed reactor. Assignment 3 asks to derive an expression for effectiveness factor based on assumptions for a reaction occurring within a porous particle. Assignment-1

1. Dilute A diffuses through a stagnant liquid film onto a plane surface consisting
of B, reacts there to produce R which diffuses back into the mainstream. Develop
the overall rate expression for the L/S reaction which takes place on this flat
surface,
𝐴(𝑙) + 𝐵(𝑠)−→ 𝑅(𝑙)
Take the reaction step be second order with respect to A

2. In aqueous solution, and in contact with the right catalyst, reactant A is

converted to product R by the elementary reaction A→2R. Find the mass of
catalyst needed in a packed bed reactor for 90% conversion of 10 4 mol A/hr
of feed having CAO = l03 mol/m3. For this reaction
k"' = 2 m3/m3 bed. S
Additional data:
Diameter of porous catalyst pellets = 6 mm
Effective diffusion coefficient of A in the pellet = 4 X 10 -8 m3/m cat. S
Voidage of packed bed = 0.5
Bulk density of packed bed = 2000 kg/m3 of bed

3. For a flat-plate porous particle of diffusion-path length L (and infinite extent

in other directions), and with only one face permeable to diffusing reactant
gas A. Find out an expression for the η based on the following assumptions:
(a) The reaction A(g) → product(s) occurs within the particle.
(b) The surface reaction is zero order.
(c) The reaction is irreversible.
(d) The particle is isothermal.
(e) The gas is of constant density.
(f) The overall process is in steady-state.
(g) The diffusion of A in the particle is characterized by the effective
diffusivity De, which is constant.
(h) There is equimolar counter diffusion (reactants and products).

4. Gaseous feed with A and B (νo = 10 m3/hr) pass through an experimental

reactor packed with catalyst (W = 4 kg). Reaction occurs as follows:
𝐴 + 𝐵−→ 𝑅 + 𝑆
−𝑟𝐴′ = 𝑘𝐶𝐴 𝐶𝐵
Find the conversion of reactants if the feed contains CAo= 0.1 mol/m3 and CBO
= 10 mol/m3.

5. A first-order reaction is taking place inside a porous catalyst. Assume dilute

concentrations and neglect any variations in the axial (x) direction. Derive an
equation for both the internal effectiveness factors for the rectangular porous
slab shown in Figure.
